Moving from Adobe Flex to SilverLight

    Aug 17, 2007 08:57 PM | LINK

    Hello....

I am reaching out to the guru's here at Microsoft for some insight.  I built a site in adobe flex (http://www.thebassvault.com).  I am considering redoing this project using SilverLight.  This is a high traffic/popular site, but I am unsure as to the stability and learning curve of silverlight...

    Any mentorship would be appreciated.

     Thank you!

     Eric

    Hi,

I just had a look at your site, and I think you would easily be able to reproduce this (and probably make it even better) in Silverlight.

I don't think you would have to steep of a learning curve to be honest.

If I were you I would try the quickstarts on this site, get yourself familiar with Silverlight and start writing it.

The best way to learn something is to develop a specific project.

    Hi Eric,

I would be interested to hear:
    1) What is it about Adobe Flex you are unhappy with?
    2) What specifically about Silverlight attracts you?

    Thanks,

I don't think the stability will be an issue as Silverlight 1.0 will be released soon, and from my experience it is stable. Quickstarts is a good way to learn SL, and if you have specific questions you can post it here on the forum

Well, its not that I don't like Flex.  I was very impressed with what it could do.  But it did lack some of the cool media features that I see in Silver Light.  With flex, I had to still rely on building and external Flash media player and wire it up so Flex and Flash could talk to each other.

So...that brings me to answer the 2nd question.  The media aspects look great!  And I like that I can code using the .NET CLR.  Flex is this whole other "thing" eventho, its pretty straight forward...it would be one less piece of "syntax" that I would have to learn.

A few weeks ago, at my last company, Chris Carper, director of Silverlight from Microsoft, did a demo and I was very excited about its potential.

     Thanks!

    Thanks for the info...

We have quite a few MAC users (both safari and firefox).  How well does the mac version work?

     Thx!

I believe you can only use the .NET in 1.1 and it is still in alpha.  When 1.0 comes out you can use Javascript, so if you are wanting to use the .NET CLR, as you mentioned, then you'll have to use the alpha - if you do it now.  Someone will correct me if I am wrong.
