Troubleshooting for months--Siliverlight refuses to work

    May 22, 2008 08:09 PM | LINK

After pulling out my hair some months back troubleshooting Silverlight's refusal to work in IE7 (although it works fine in Firefox) and giving up, it's grown back now and I'm ready try again.

I have been trying to install Silverlight on my computer running Windows Vista Business (now with SP1 installed) since November 2007. I tried every registry modification, checked permissions, uninstalled, removed registry keys, reinstalled, uninstalled (and repeated those two steps over 50 times) reinstalled 2.0 beta (hoping it would finally fix the problem) but to no avail. I just don't want to have to reinstall Windows Vista just to make Silverlight work! I'm hoping to get some additional assistance so I can solve this problem once and for all.

To recap, I'm having the same problem many other users have with Silverlight. I see the graphics/box prompting me to install silverlight, shutdown my browser and return and still see the box indicating that it's not installed. I have viewed many support threads on Silverlight.net regarding installation woes and troubleshooting and have tried every single one, double and triple-checking each step from every registry key to every uninstall/reinstall step. Nothing has seemed to work.

I don't believe I ever had a pre-1.0 release version of Silverlight installed. I've only tried to install 1.0 on up. Even trying 2.0 beta. I am willing to go through things again especially if anyone has any new/updated info or ideas.

So, who's ready to step up to the plate first? I greatly appreciate any and all help in getting Silverlight to work!

install vista Installation Silverlight wont display won't display installationtion failure Silverlight 1.1 alpha refresh not working Silverlight 1.0 silverlight 1.1 Silverlight problems cannot Annoying install problems all versions Silverlight problems silverlight 2.0 Blend 2.5 March Preview Silverlight 2.0

I had the same problem until today.  Silverlight 1.0 never worked.  However I ran across this fix while troubleshooting a different problem that turned out to be the same cause.  It turns out that some of the registry keys were created in Vista without correct permissions granted to the Administrators group and System account.  I found a procedure on Aaron Stebner's WebLog to reset the permissions on the entire registry hive.

Silverlight started working immediately after I rebooted.

I'm running 32 bit Vista and it worked fine but there seems to be some discussion around using this utility for 64 bit systems.

I was pulling my own hair out until today.

That's what I'm talking about! Problem fixed. Ran the tool and it fixed Silverlight instantly. I didn't even uninstall silverlight. It just started working after running the tool. Thank you very much. Now I'm going to leave some positive feedback to the developer of the tool.

I never installed any of the other software mentioned on his page and wonder how my registry got all corrupt like that. Nonetheless problem is fixed and my hair can grow back now. [;)]
