would be nice if we had an official place! It would be much clearer for everyone.
We are all waiting for an official reply. In the meantime, the main thread seems to be
http://forums.silverlight.net/forums/t/207084.aspx if you want to make sure you don't get behind on new information.
The news reports say that Microsoft is giving up on Silverlight. Can Microsoft provide us with an official statement? I know news people can get it wrong.
Can you give us a link to an article where MICROSOFT says its giving up on Silverlight? I see plenty saying they've shifted, and I see plenty of bloggers extrapolating way too far.
Bob Muglia said: "The purpose of Silverlight has never been to replace HTML, but rather to do the things that HTML (and other technologies) can’t, and to do so in a way that’s easy for developers to use. Silverlight enables great
client app and media experiences. It’s now installed on two-thirds of the world’s computers, and more than 600,000 developers currently build software using it. Make no mistake; we’ll continue to invest in Silverlight and enable developers to build great
apps and experiences with it in the future."
Here's what I think:
Bob was highlighting ASP.NET because the next version will have HTML5 capabilities. In retrospect he should have reiterated where Microsoft has positioned Silverlight to avoid confusion and wild speculation. He had to make a follow-up statement to clarify
Microsoft's direction because he didn't thoroughly state the direction of both web-building tools.
Microsoft needs Silverlight for the web because by using it they can control the whole application experience. With traditional web apps they are at the mercy of all of the companies that build the various browsers. Applications are only as good as is
allowed by the browser. Microsoft can't even build a better browser because they have to conform to HTML standards, and when there are standards, there are brakes holding back innovation and development. Silverlight allows Microsoft to be a leader in web
development, limited only by their imagination and desire to work hard to create good web-building tools. HTML was a good start but now the architecture needs to be revamped. That's why Silverlight ditched HTML for XAML for starters. I certainly don't see
Microsoft throwing away a tool and a strategy that is way better than HTML.
I'd also like to know: - Does Microsoft intend to open up Silverlight and let other vendors build development tools that target the Silverlight runtime module? That would promote the Silverlight platform.
- A major target for Silverlight is the Windows Mobile phone. People like me will build applications for the Windows phone using Silverlight, and some apps such as social networking apps will access external databases. It would be great if
Silverlight also ran on Android and any other phone OS's so that people with Windows phones
and people with other phones can use the same apps and share the same data. It will hinder or kill adoption of an app if people with other types of phones aren't able to network with people who use the app on the Windows phone.
OK, THE DEAL IS QUITE SIMPLE INDEED, ON NOVEMBER 2 THE W3C DECLARED THAT IE9 WAS THE BEST HTML5 COMPLIANT WEB BROWSER OUT THERE, EVEN BETTER THAT CHROME, SAFARI, OPERA AND FIREFOX, AND HONESTLY, BY MUCH. THAT SAID, WAS CLEAR TO ME BOB MUGLIA'S WORDS, THEY
ARE ATTEMPTING TO POSITIONATE IE9 AS THE LEADER, ABSOLUTE BROWSER BACK AGAIN. SINCE IT'S NOVELTY IS HTML5 THEY NEED TO "FLASH" IT, SORRY FOR THE EXPRESSION, BUT... ANYWAY, FORM OUR PERSPECTIVE SILVERLIGHT WILL
SHIFT, THEN WE THINK, OK THEY ARE EITHER GOING TO FINISHE SILVERLIGHT, OR LEAVE IT ONLY AS A MOBILE PLATFORM. NOOOOO SILVERLIGHT WILL CONTINUE AS IT IS, ACTUALLY EVEN BETTER, THE ONLY DEAL IS THAT MICROSOFT IS TRYING TO GIVE IE9 SOME
SPACE TO BE A SUCCESS, THAT ALSO MEANS, I'T'LL BE LAUNCHED SOON, IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS SOMETHING BAD, ACTUALLY IS BETTER, WE KNOW SILVERLIGHT IS FAR BETTER THAT HTML5, FLASH/FLEX AND JAVAFX, SO? WHY SHOULD WE WORRY? WE ARE THE STATE OF THE ART
DEVELOPERS.
HOPE YOU ALL PEOPLE RAISE YOUR MOOD, CHEER UP, HOLIDAYS ARE COMING!!!!!!!!
Unified web? HTML is the bane of all human technology how can you advocate html5. If I had the power I would go back and kill whoever invented html.
I don't care what technology takes over but it has* to based on c#, java or c++ ( any real* language) and you should write it on the client side like a real* program.
They should just put silverlight in a service pack and then it would be game over for all these crap technologies. I am not pro silverlight or MS it is just so far ahead of everyone else I have nobody else to cheer for.
HTML5 is a joke. Mac is also a joke akin to pogs and powerrangers.
In 30 years when nasa builds a shuttle are they going to use html5 on a iphone? God help us if they do, the masses of newbs are pushing us to oblivion.... The shuttle server still does postbacks I can see it now.
I am joking of course but there is some truth in it.

If you want a link to prove that Silverlight is not dead, please re-read what Bob Muglia said: Silverlight is still a great solution for LOB and media: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-our-strategy-with-silverlight-has-shifted/7834?tag=mantle_skin;content
It won't be dead until MS itself says it is.
