I tried to install both silverlight 2/3 tool for VS2008 SP1 on Windows XP but got a fatal error: 0x80070643. Knowing from this page (http://blogs.msdn.com/amyd/archive/2009/03/19/silverlight-tools-installation-error-codes.aspx) that it means some existing
versions of components has been installed. However, the solutions there of uninstalling Silverlight (using Add/Remove programs, or manually using windows installer clean up) do not help. I also tried to uninstall all silverlight related products: Blend 2/3,
Silverlight 2/3 toolkit, Silverlight 2/3 SDK, but no help either.
I read other posts in this forum, and seems that none of the suggestion are helpful to my case. I tried nearly everything except re-installing VS2008 (I don't want to try this out unless there are no other steps).
It seems to be complaining about KB956453 (for silverlight 2 tools) and KB967143 (for silverlight 3 tools) with error code 1603. None of these are installed on my computer.
Some other related errors in the event logs are:
Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU -- Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VSDesigner,version="9.0.0.0",publicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11d50a3a",processorArchitecture="MSIL",fileVersion="9.0.30729.170",culture="neutral"'.

I also tried to install silverlight2 sdk manually, and the following error was returned:
Product: Microsoft Silverlight 2 SDK -- Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.Silverlight.ServiceReference,version="2.0.5.0",publicKeyToken="b03f5f7f11d50a3a",processorArchitecture="X86",fileVersion="2.0.31005.0",culture="neutral"'.

While I can successfully install silverlight3 sdk.
Already fighting with the issues for hours. Really need helps here...
Thanks....!
silverlight2 silverlight3 tool install problem visual studio 2008 sp1
How's your issue going now? Please first remove all the Silverlight related, including Silverlight SDK, Silverlight Tools For VS, Expression, RIA Services etc. Then, we need to manually delete Silverlight folder and regesiter key. Please reference to
this link.
To reinstall them, please follow the steps
here. When we install the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio, we'd better right click on the installation file and choose "Run as Administrator". Please let me know the result.
Best regards,
Jonathan

Double click on the exe file and wait until the intall wizard is shown. At this point, an extracted file will be generated at a similar location like this. c:\66a6bea3c0729435750a789937323e.
Copy the whole folder to another place. These files are located.
Remove all the Silverlight related just like what I said on my last reply.
Remove KB967143 if it is shown on the list by clicking Control Panel->Uninstall a Program.(Optional)
Restart your computer.
Manually install KB967143 --> SDK--->Tools etc.
Please let me know the result.

Jonathan

Thanks for your suggestion. I have actually tried to remove Silverlight and related components following the approached mentioned in
this page. I have also tried to extract the Silverlight Tools setup package using the /extract command line argument and set up one by one. Unfortunately, KB967143 still failed to install.
I could try that again, but sorry I am currently in tight schedule of projects. Please let me try that out later.
Are there any really manual way to install the KB967143 package?
I am having similar problems after downloading a suite of programs from MS. It looked like all was going well, which was great news, as I have given up trying same with the nightmare package MYSQL fron the SUN download site. But alas I had error message
"We're sorry the folowing components failed to install. It was on the last step of the multi product install "Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio. It produced an extensive error log.
I have exact the same problem that Kenneth has. Same message.
Only this differences:
- I have a parallel Installation of VS 2008 pro and the express versions. I have functioning XNA, DirectX SDK, MS Sqlserver Express 2008. And I installed MVC together with Silverlight with the MS Web Installer.
MVC was installed without problems in both versions of VS. Silverligth broke with Kenneths message.
- In add/remove programs there is nothing between Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft SQL Server. Sorry, no Silverlight in between. And I never installed a Silverlight SDK before. Only the runtime plugin to see the demos from Microsoft.
I am very eager to test Silverlight, but surely deinstalling what I have on my machine for that is not possible.
Any suggestions or news about this error would be very much appreciated.

Hi Johnathan,
Thanks for your reply!
I have posted the issue to http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/f0ef6db8-fa10-4645-845c-97962cfac7e0 and it helped me to locate the potential problem. The manifest of the Microsoft.VSDesigner inside my Visual Studio seems to be corrupted.
I tried to remove and re-install both Silverlight and Visual Studi for a few times (manually and using uninstaller) but all did not help.
Do you have other suggestion? Re-installing the OS from scratch would be my last step, but I definitely don't want to do so...
Thanks,
Kenneth

Did you try to install silverlight tools by choosing "save" instead of "run" then choose a path to install this on and then
once it is saved on your computer you can find that path and install it that way
I usually choose this method if I am installing anything in codeplex
I dont know if this will help you....I just wanted to help....

Yes. That's my usual approach. I always save the filebefore running.
Thanks for your suggestion :)
