I disagree...if you remember in 2008 we had Silverlight Beta 1 in March then we had Beta 2 in summer. Then we had RC1 a couple weeks before it was released in October.
I would guess anywhere from 4-6 months. Remember also....Visual Studio 2010 is scheduled for release around the fall. I would not be surprised if Silverlight 3 was a VS 2010 baked in and the only way they would do that is if they waited for SL3 to be announced about the same time as VS 2010.

I would bet it's near October / November timeframe.

I would guess ~ 4months. They've said no beta 2 right? So it's this and then RTW I think. I assume that means they are more confident on the stability of this release than they were w/ SL2 at Beta1.

Definitely some time in the near, or distant, future.

Just FYI
If we develop an SL3 app that is ready at about the same time as SL3 RTW then everything is fine; however, if our SL3 app is ready six months before we get SL3 RTW then we are hosed.
So we need to make a decision - do we develop with SL2 and miss the great new features of SL3 or do we develop with SL3 and hope our finished application does not sit on the shelf because SL3 has not been released?
We have a good idea how long it will take to develop our application but we have no idea when to possibly expect SL3 RTW.
We understand MS does not want to commit to a deliver date; however, MS is not the only one trying to make a living with SL.

Exactly the decision I am agonizing over at the moment!

I think it will be released in less then 3 months. Don't compare with SL2 because SL2 was the actual base foundation in which .net introduced.

That is what Scott Guthrie hinted at from the keynote yesterday I remember him saying that this would be the only beta and exect RTM after this.
However Silverlight 3 beta 1 (missing ClearType for example) is NOT feature complete neither is Blend 3 (Sketch thing is not in beta 1). Microsoft with Beta 2 last year made it "feature complete" before doing RTW. I would guess they have to do a Blend 3/Silverlight 3 "feature complete" RC or Beta 2 before going RTW.

I was just watching a Deep Dive into Microsoft Silverlight Graphics and on the slide it had a bullet point clear as day that Silverlight 3 Released Summer 2009. Very cool...looks like I was wrong thinking it would be the fall.

Wrote an article with a little more detail about Silverlight 3's release date:

Could anybody from Microsoft please confirm/deny this?
I mean all we have is a slide from a ppt presentation, it could have been that the guy just needed to write there some date quickly and he thought of summer.
Right now I'm working on an SL2 application that should be published around the end of August.
Silverlight 3 would help me to make it better with less work, but I can't afford to wait with the release till the late fall or something.
Not expecting a 100% certain date of course, just a confirmation that the targeted date is really somewhere in the summer and it's independent of other releases.
Thank you.

I always suggest: "Do nothing on your production systems until there's a go-live license"). For example one of the beta's for ASP.NET MVC came with a Go-Live License.

@Herthoren,
I hear what you are saying. However, the PPT slide on my article is from the Sr. Program Manager at Microsoft, so it does give some credence then some evangelist or MVP that doesn't work for Microsoft. BTW...the internal date from Microsoft is already set and known to people. I think its NDA'ed though. This is just "public/released" information that I am basing my information on.
Just to add more to the Summer timeline speculation...this is from Tim Heuer's blog:
http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2009/03/18/silverlight-3-whats-new-a-guide.aspx#feedback
"Chris -- is your application have a hard release to production in 3 months? Email me." Tim is responding to a comment on his blog to a user that is concerned about having a hard 3 month timeline. So, it would seem the release could be "around 3 months from now" which would put it in the summer timeframe.

Another way to predict the SL3 release date is by the availability dates of SL3 books on Amazon.com compared to SL2 books and the SL2 release date.
SL2 books became available late October/November except for one in June by Microsoft and SL2 was release Oct 14.
SL3 books are scheduled for August except for one book in June by Microsoft.
So based on this info and barring any slips, my guesss is SL3 release in late July.

I heard that before on this forum (maybe even from you), and that was correct for Silverlight 2. The downer is the .NET RIA Services and it being delayed until the fall.
03-25-2009 2:32 AM |
Source of that information?
The main reason I switched my application to SL3 was RIA services:/
BTW, irrelevant, but I know of at least 3 books on Amazon that are stated to be based on SL3 and are due to June.

Great detective work bartczernicki! I just realized something weird while answering this guy. It's really kind of funny to me that today the Obama Administration was "Open for Questions," (Americans basically asked the President questions, and they were self-regulated), and yet Microsoft is being soooooo secretive over a date. So, in one hand, we have the leader of the free world telling you his plans, and in the other we have no release date for Silverlight 3. And who's getting hurt here?. You guys. I'm just sayin'. People want more accountability these days.

Let's all put our bets down!
You won't get anyone from Microsoft to give you a release date unless they are absolutely sure themselves (not even if you get REALLY good contacts to the team - believe me we've been pulling all the strings we could, and all we got was a rough idea, not much better than what you see in this thread).
05-10-2009 8:56 PM |
A lot of the Amazon Silverlight 3 books have a publish date of August 1 so I suspect around August is as good as anyone including Microsoft can make.

Im sure im not the only one with this issue...
I currently run and maintain a website which is using SL2, i will be looking to replace this with a SL3 equivalent to take advantage of the high definition capabilities in SL3 however i cannot replace SL2 on my computer to develop with SL3 incase i need to make alterations to my existing SL2 website.
Is there anyway of running both in parallel on one computer? or does anyone know a good virtual machine application i can use? (prefferably free and im using vista for my sins)
Regards,

I would assume SL3 is coming out sometime similar to the release date of SL2 last year. Maybe October/November...come to think of it I can't remember when SL2 came out!
I know my first shipped SL2 game I had to convert to RC0 sometime around October.

Today I overheard a nearby developer talking about an announcement he read stating that the RTW is now scheduled for July 10. Not sure what his source was, but he seemed pretty excited about whatever he was reading. A google search failed to confirm this.

How about this. In one of Scott Guthrie's webcast slides, the host mentioned that Tim Heuer will be doing a SL3 webcast on July 9. If you follow Tim, you know he's doing a great job disseminating useful information about Silverlight, almost as soon as whatever new comes available. I would bet that the July 9 webcast is about something new... RTW? It was also mentioned that there will be "a lot of other talks on Silverlight 3 comes July"... This, coupled with the fact that two SL3 books are coming out in June (one from L. Maroney who works for MSFT) and three coming out in July, you get the idea :D
P.S. the webcast happened yesterday, you can download and listen to the 90 minutes talk, very informative... SL3 RTW will have multi-touch and definitely will have ClearType support.

I wouldn't read too much into the release data of the L. Maroney book. That is Introducing Silverlight 3. The Introducing Silverlight 2 book came out June of last year as well, way before Silverlight 2 was actually released. I haven't seen anything to contradict the Ars Technica date yet.
05-28-2009 6:32 PM |
Alright, let's hope that the Ars Technica date is real then :D

Silverlight 3 and Expression Blend 3 RC downloads
http://www.thomasclaudiushuber.com/blog/2009/07/09/silverlight-3-and-expression-blend-3-are-now-avaibable/
Does anyone have any news on Expression Design 3 downloads?
07-09-2009 5:52 PM |
Why do you say RC? It isn't a release candidate...its the full version trial.
07-09-2009 6:43 PM |
The title on the download page is "Microsoft Expression Blend 3 + SketchFlow RC" - it's not clear if the RC applies to just SketchFlow or both Blend 3 and SketchFlow - does anyone know for sure?
07-09-2009 6:54 PM |
I think this is the release, because it works with the Silverlight 3 developer tools. If it was an RC (internal build for partners), then the assemblies would complain and not work.
The Silverlight.net site still says Silverlight 3 Beta, but all the links are updated...the RC is probably just a typo (or left behind).

I think SKETCHFLOW is the tool that is in RC perharps?

SL3 was released today, July 9th. Just shows that you shouldn't take rumors for granted.

The current Expression Blend 3 download is an RC - see Christian's post
