I have a serious problem with all versions of Silverlight. I just tested 1.0 Release version. After installation I can run one Silverlight application in my IE7 browser. When the application unloads my whole system hangs. The mouse pointer is still moving but not even Alt-Ctrl-Del works.
If I pull the plug and uninstall Silverlight my system runs normal again.

oskbo,
Does this behavior manifest itself only with this one application or any Silverlight 1.0 application? If this application is publicly available, could you provide the URL? When your system hangs, is the CPU use high or low?
Let's see if we can't get to the bottom of this.

Jonathan,
This happens to all Silverlight applications. Then fan always speeds up when it hangs so i asume that the CPU is high. My computer really freezes when this happens, but it does not crash.
As a first step, can you help me to make sure that I really have uninstalled all that relates to Silverlight? So I can do a clean install of 1.0 and try again.
Thanks, Oskar

You an uninstall you silverlight first, the way is control pannel->install or remove software->silverlight . Then you can go to http://silverlight.net to reinstall the silverlight again, and then validate that if the sample silverlight applications works?
If the sample works well, I think it is not the problem of silverlight itself. It is maybe the problem of the application you viewed.
Or other reason, for example, Is there some antivirus software you installed?
I knew from this forum, some the antivirus software affect the silverlight usage.

Could you tell me the IE7 security settings? If you provide the details of reproducing it, it is very appreciated! I need the link you accessed.
Thanks

I have uninstalled from the control pannel. But since I have had problems I have installed/uninstalled many times. My question was how I can make sure that my system is clean from all previous installations before installing 1.0 again?
Im running Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows workstation, but I deactivated "Real-Time Protection" .
My security setting are: Medium-High for the Internet zone.
Latest application I tried was http://www.flowers-for-you.com.my/ and it works as long as I keep it in the browser. But If I close the tab my comuter freeze.

I think if the dir and regkeys don't exist, siverlight is uninstalled. Please tell us if IE crash again after you reinstall silverlight.
dir: %Programfiles%\Microsoft Silverlight
RegKey:

I have now uninstalled Silverlight since the crash.
Dir does not exist.
RegKeys does not exist.
I have uninstalled all browser plugins like "developers toolbar", Sun Java, Acrobat reader, Flash.
I'll be back with a report after the install.

oskbo, I attempted to reproduce the case you metioned. My OS is XP Pro SP2 with the latest patch and IE7. And I installed the Kapasky personal version.
I found when I installed the kapasky, the computer became very slow. The computer is like to lost respond. But when I deactive the protection function of Kapasky, the computer restored to the normal status, any operation with normal speed.
And I installed the latest silverlight 1.0, and access the website you metioned, it works very well, no any problem.
But when I actived the protection function of Kapasky, the computer became very slow again.
Just like locked.
So in my opnion, your problem maybe due to the Kapasky, if you uninstall kapasky, silverlight would works well.

I'm having the same issue but I'm not running Kapasky. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight for months across several versions and it freezes my computer every time. I can go to the page once and subsequent visits result in my system locking up for about 10 minutes with IE pegging out the CPU. The page that did it this morning is the Microsoft home page with the Halo video. When I uninstall Silverlight my system works fine.

I second that, there are numerous posts on this forum about problems with Kapasky and Silverlight.

I'm running WinXP Pro with SP2 and Symantec. Sometimes I'll get error messages when Silverlight crashes IE and sometimes I won't. Does Silverlight create a log somewhere when it errors out?

I'm glad to find this thread. Both my firefox 2 and IE6 are having the same problem. I just upgraded to IE7 but the same. Once I went to Popfly.ms, actually once got to any silverlight app, the CPU usage went to 99% and the fan started screaming. Mouse can move but nothing else. I've tried waiting for hours but no use. The only way was to hold the power key to shut machine down. Actually the very early version of silverlight worked. I remember the latest Windows Live Writer gave the exact same problem. The MS guys gave a trick, which was to disable the Windows Live Writer Upgrade Service and it worked. I'm wondering if there is a similar thing to turn off.
Since both Firefox and IE acted the exact same way, I'm sure, very sure, it's silverlight's problem.

Glad to see more people reporting this. I still have the issue as well. I see a lot of potential with silverlight but unfortunately I can't work with it. My home computer doesn't have the issue. I'll ask again: Is there an error log or a dump somewhere to help get to the bottom of this?

Hi all,
This post seems to be getting a lot of views but no answers from the microsoft team. Come on help us out.
I just installed siliverlight and after trying to navigate away from microsoft.com my computer froze and I could do nothing but move the mouse cursor. I waited 15 minutes and nothing happened. I couldn't even access task manager. My system clock didn't even update itself.
I am running windows xp sp2 with all updates installed. I am running Symantec virus scanner and no software firewalls. I don't have anything out of the ordinary running on my machine. Can someone from MSFT check this out or at least acknowledge us. Let us know if there is something that we can do to help narrow down the problem.

...uninstalling silverlight, losing too much time rebooting after freezes
11-28-2007 3:37 AM |
I will switch from Kaspersky to Microsoft ForeFront Client Security during december and will be back with a report.
I have not have time to spend on testing this lately, but since I uninstalled/reinstalled all browser related third party plugins. I still have Silverlight installed and it does not freeze my computer every time I run in to sliverlight enabled web site, but it still happens from time to time.

freedumb87:Jonathan, are you still researching this? It's been 3 months since your post and there have been no suggestions from you or any Microsoft employees. Does Microsoft want Siliverlight to fail or what? Come on this is ridiculous.
I apologize for the inconvenience, Chad. I've been helping out another team so I've been away from Silverlight for the last few months. I'll check this out. In the meantime, I can send you some instructions on creating a crash dump. That will help us analyze the problem, at least on your machine.

That would be helpful. I have sliverlight uninstalled at the moment but I would be willing to install it again if providing a dump file will help out this problem.

Jonathan, I'd like to get my hands on those instructions as well if you don't mind. I also have silverlight currently uninstalled, but if we can get this problem solved then I'd love to start working with it.

freedumb87 and Chad,
Check your personal messages.
12-27-2007 4:08 PM |
Thanks for your attention on this.
I reinstalled silverlight, went to Microsoft's home page, and as soon as I navigated away it froze briefly. When I tried to navigate back to it, the computer completely froze and I had to kill the process. IE had the cpu pegged at 99 and the "Loading" animated gif for the IE tab only spun every 20 to 30 seconds. I have the dump ready to upload, just let me know what to do with it.
12-27-2007 4:12 PM |
Thanks, Chad.
Reply privately to me with your e-mail address and I'll send you instructions for uploading the file to me. Thank you for your continued assistance!
12-28-2007 10:40 AM |
The dump as been uploaded... hopefully the problem will easily present itself
everybody cross your fingers....
12-31-2007 9:42 AM |
The crash (freeze) doesn't happen if I disable Google Desktop. My office mate has the same issue so we eliminated common gadgets and the issue persisted. Let me know if you want me to generate another dump for you. Let me know either way so I'll know when I can uninstall silverlight again pending a fix.
12-31-2007 9:59 AM |
So, if I understand it correctly, removing Google Desktop resolved the issue on your machine, but the issue still persists on your office mate's machine, even though s/he removed, presumably, Google Desktop as well. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Could you please generate and send a dump from your office mate's machine? You can use the same upload method as before.
Thank you, again, for your assistance!
12-31-2007 10:22 AM |
To clarify, disabling Google Desktop does fix the issue on my computer and my office mate's computer. We tested by going back and forth between the microsoft home page and msdn home page. With GD started the CPU pegs out when leaving a page with Silverlight.
So what happens now? Are you going to try to reproduce the issue on your side?
12-31-2007 10:34 AM |
Thanks again, Chad.
Yep, that's the plan. At a minimum, it gives the product group a starting point to find the root cause of the conflict.
Because Silverlight 1.0 updates are pushed out automatically, I may not know exactly when a fix for this issue goes live. If I do find out, though, I'll let everyone here know.
12-31-2007 12:41 PM |
Jonathan, first thanks for you attention on the matter. I installed the dubugger tools and reproduced the error as you asked. I also disabled google desktop and was not able to reproduce the error again until I re-enabled google desktop. I am running google desktop with a few gadgets running. If you want my dump file as well let me know.
12-31-2007 12:58 PM |
You're very welcome!
Yes, I'd like to see the dump file. Message me privately with an e-mail address I can send the upload instructions to. I appreciate your assistance!
01-17-2008 8:58 AM |
Have you been able to reproduce the issue on your side?
01-17-2008 5:22 PM |
Sorry, I forgot to get back to everyone.
I didn't get the crippling high CPU hang (although my CPU was chugging hard), but I was able to gather enough information to get the bug filed on January 7 and the developers have access to the dump files you and freedumb87 provided. I really appreciate your help!
I hope everyone can respect that I, and anyone else here at Microsoft, will not be able to give an ETA on a fix, but you have my assurance that I am keeping tabs on it and all the other bugs I file for Silverlight.
Keep those bug reports coming!

Hi Handsofblue,
If all bug-fixers above cannot solve the crash problem, I would suggest you uninstall Symantec (Norton) Anti-virus and re-install another anti-virus software (e.g. AVG Anti-virus free version). You may take a look of my post at "Freeze at Silverlight Showcase" at this Forum http://silverlight.net/forums/t/8794.aspx.

Hi Chad Morgan,
I suspect the pop-up blocker & anti-spyware settings of Google Toolbar/Desktop can be interfering with Silverlight video (& audio) streaming. What you and your colleagues seeing can be another security crash with Silverlight, similar to anti-virus software crash.

Hi Chad and Freedumb87,
Google Desktop also has security settings issues, including anti-spyware and anti-hacking issues (you can find them on the web). I have not tested the impact of different security settings of Google Desktop because I have uninstalled Google Desktop for quite some time. Google Desktop seemed crashing with some real-time applications (VoIP & IPTV) on my WinXP Core 2 Duo PC.

Hi Vincent,
I'll take a look at the security settings within Google Desktop but in my opinion they should work together with no problem. I use my google desktop more than I visit webpages with silverlight, so for now, google wins as far as that goes. Also, why is it that another solution for people is to change their anti-virus software to another manufacturer. If their computer was working fine before installing Silverlight, then the problem seems to be Siliverlight itself.
Thanks for your input,
02-18-2008 9:57 AM |
Hi Chad,
I agree to your view that such crash can be viewed either as a problem of Silverlight or Google Desktop's (anti-virus software's). My experience and tests show that anti-virus software (& Google Desktop) can be a significant source of crash on many video and audio applications from time to time. Silverlight is just one of such video applications, which are either real-time or with a relatively small buffer during video streaming. We have to monitor & prepare to resolve such crash daily because the security settings are updated frequently (in response to new attack or new security holes found), at anti-virus software or Google Desktop etc.
Video and audio applications have active and continous flow of data into & out of the PC. This makes the security settings & anti-virus software easily scan (or block) the video & audio streams too much and create serious interference (or crash). Other applications will not experience such interference & crash so often and so easily.
Best regards,
p.s. We may say the security updates or the software design are not perfect and result in serious crash from time to time. This is how and why Skype (a telecom operator) was out of services for around 3 days in mid-August 2007.

Finally after months of installing-uninstalling-reinstalling silverlight in all its forms and versions I am able to get popfly to work on my laptop. The issue seems to be resolved for now - the solution getting rid of googledesktop - complete uninstall of google did the trick.
So removal of google desktop seems to work at least in some cases.

Dear All,
I find Silverlight 2.0 requires long time (may be 3 to 5 minutes) to download the video, with download rate around 100 Kbps. Do you experience this? If yes, Silverlight must fix such slow download or people will drop watching video on Silverlight. This can be a possible interference or minor crash at Silverlight 2.0 download. I am using Win XP, IE7 and a broadband of 3 to 6 Mbps on a Core 2 Duo PC.

Hi,
Please take a look of my latest post (on 15/4/08) on MLB TV, the thread which is viewed over 300,000 times recently.
04-15-2008 9:33 AM |
I'm not sure of your intentions, but it seems like you are trying to hijack this thread. If your previous post is referencing something that would be helpful to others, then don't be vague about it. Give us a link with some details of what you are talking about.
On another note, I have reinstalled silverlight and have not run into the crashing/freezing issues anymore. I didn't uninstall any of my previous apps either (i.e. google tool/sidebar, virus scanner, etc.). There must have been an update that fixed the crashing issues (for me at least).
04-15-2008 9:50 AM |
Dear Freedumb87,
My intention is to show people crashes (between software clients) are happening under different situations. The case for MLB TV is another example of crash (minor crash). Thanks for updating us about your experience and thoughts. You find there is no crash now does not guarantee there will be no crash in the coming 3 months. 3-days outage happened to Skype in August 2007 when it experienced no previous serious outage.
Thanks,

Hello,
I am currently researching a crash when running our web application that is reported in increasing frequency by users of Internet Explorer 7. The situation is as follows:- Our application uses frames, one of them hosting an input form that has some windowed VB6 ActiiveX controls used for specific data entry (automatic address resolution).- Some (but far from all) IE7 users report that IE7 crashes if they open a second instance of the web application in a tab of the same IE7 window where the first instance is running- The issue seems to be tied to specific -mostly brand new- computers. Both Windows XP and Windows Vista users report the problemNow I got one laptop computer that has the issue on my desk for investigation. I found the following:- IE7 still crashes if I load a very simple web page hosting a stripped-down version of the ActiveX control (containing no code and no child controls) in 2 tabs and I refresh the second tab a few times- The crash stops happening if I change the threading model of the control from 'Apartment threaded' to 'Single threaded'. Although this makes the application much more stable (completely contrary to the recommendations of Microsoft, I may add :P), that solution is not acceptable to our customers because single threaded ActiveX controls do not receive Tab-key keyboard events and the control is to be used for keyboard data entry.Today we found that the crash also stops happening if we disable all of the the following browser Add-ons:AgControl ClassWindows Live Sign-in HelperWindows MessengerAs soon as one of these add-ons is enabled again, a web page hosting apartment-threaded VB6 custom controls will crash the browser again. Now the msn messenger stuff is no problem - we can easily do without those plugins, but we would really appreciate some help in solving the issue with the Silverlight plug-in. Our development team in India just completed a web-based visual workflow designer programmed in Silverlight, so even if disabling AgControl helps our customers today, we would just have the problem back in the very near future :(My company is Microsoft gold partner and I would be willing and able to work with someone in debugging this Silverlight/IE7 stability issue (we have all flavors of Visual Studio available if a debug environment would be needed).Best regards,Berend EngelbrechtDecos Software Engineering BVNoordwijk, Netherlandsb.engelbrecht at gmail dot com

I recommend contacting your Partner Technical Consultant. They can provide assistance and, if necessary, create a support case for you to work with a Microsoft Silverlight developer support engineer.
