I have been trying for a while to install Silverlight 1.0 on an HP desktop with an Intel P4 2.8Ghz and 2gb of memory running Windows XP SP2 and IE7. I have downloaded the installation, but when running it after approx 5 seconds get an installation failed message.
Clicking on more information directs me to a web page detailing Error 1642: "You reached this page since you encountered problems with the installation of Microsoft Silverlight. In many case these problems are due to incompatible browser and operating system or due to an old pre-release version of Silverlight. Please follow the Uninstall Instructions to remove any previous versions from your system and then Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/Silverlight and install the latest version."
As far as I can see the browser and operating system are fine. Going through Add/Remove programs I can see no evidence of any version of Silverlight.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Did you install this version?
http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx

I have tried that link and I get the same error when I run the EXE: Silverlight dialog with the text "Unable to install Silverlight", "Installation Failed", this link http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/help.aspx?errorID=1642 and a close button.
Let me know if I can provide any further information that may help in diagnosing this issue.

Yes I did install that version, although I have also re-downloaded and got the same error.

I failed to repro it on a clean XP SP2 machine. Do you have any pre-release version of Silverlight installed?
05-07-2008 5:42 AM |
Allen,
I don't remember installing any pre-release version and I have nothing listed in Add/Remove programs, nothing in c:\Program Files and a registry search for "Silverlight" turns up nothing. Was there a different name pre-release?

Much the same as Dan - I also don't think any earlier version was installed and I can't see anything referencing Silverlight in any folder or in the registry.
Is there any particular registry entry that would prove this?

Can you see any versions installed via Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?

Hi Allen, I can't see any versions of anything called Silverlight. I have stored 2 bitmap images of the complete contents of the Windows Installer Cleanup utility: http://www.wollastonsit.co.uk/Silverlight/installed%20products.bmp http://www.wollastonsit.co.uk/Silverlight/installed%20products%20continued.bmp Regards, Gavin

I don't have anything showing in the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I can't see any uncommon applications that we have in common either. Any other ideas?
Dan.

I just successfully installed Version 2 Beta 1 from here: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx?v=2.0

From the log we can see the files are extracted to r:\temp instead of c:\temp. To work it around, Try:
Run silverlight.exe /x:c:\temp /u to extract the files to c:\temp instead then run c:\temp\install.exe

Thanks for that - that worked perfectly.
