What is WCF RIA Services?

Microsoft WCF RIA Services simplifies the traditional n-tier application pattern by bringing together the ASP.NET and Silverlight platforms using WCF. The RIA Services provides a prescriptive pattern to write application logic that runs on the mid-tier and controls access to data for queries, changes and custom operations. It also provides end-to-end support for common tasks such as data validation, authentication and roles by integrating with Silverlight components on the client and ASP.NET on the mid-tier. It includes rich tooling for integrating client and mid-tier projects and for building rich UI through the simplicity of drag-drop support

 

Where can I download the BETA for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 from?

The installer can be found here or at http://silverlight.net/getstarted/silverlight3/default.aspx. 

You will need the following pre-requisites to install WCF RIA Services:

1. Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Visual Web Developer Express 2008 SP1 
2.  Silverlight 3.0 (Runtime,SDK and Tools) 

Installation Instructions:

1. Uninstall previously installed preview
2. Install the PDC Beta for Visual Studio 2008 SP1

The go-live restriction from the EULA has been dropped in response to repeated requests. But please remember that this is a preview, use it at your own risk and expect breaking changes.

Note: This is a 4MB Download. If the MSI you download is 5.68 megs then wait for a bit and try again as the bits get propped to all the servers.

Where can I download the Preview for Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 from?

 

The installer can be found here or at http://silverlight.net/getstarted/silverlight-4-beta/

You will need the following pre-requisites to install WCF RIA Services: 

1.  Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 or Visual Web Developer Express 2010 Beta 2
2. Silverlight 4 (Runtime, SDK and Tools) 

Installation Instructions:

1. Uninstall previously installed preview
2.  Install the PDC Preview for Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2

This is not a Go Live release.

Note: The Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 preview release will also be installed part of Silverlight 4 Tools. The preview cannot be installed if you have the WCF RIA Services Beta installed.
