I had Silverlight 2 installed and everything was fine. Since I upgraded the browser from IE7 to IE8, I got prompted to install Silverlight. I uninstalled Silverlight 2, it's directory and cleared the IE cache. I installed Silverlight 3 successfully. I thought great I got the latest version. Surprise! When I go to silverlight.net it prompts me to install again. I install again and get an error it already exist try uninstall and reinstall. I do that to find out I get the same thing over and over. I check the add-ons and Silverlight is enabled. I only have five other add-ons, 2 of which are microsoft. This is a clean install of XP Pro sp3 using IE8, which is supported. After wiping all Silverlight existance... directory, cache, registry, and starting over; problem does not go away. Ideas?

what is the error that you get though??

It is not really an error more of a message:
The version of Microsoft Silverlight you attempted to install is already installed.
If you need to reinstall Silverlight, you should uninstall Silverlight before attempting to reinstall it.

I'm having the exact same issue on a fresh install of Windows 7 RTM.
I've checked the add-on's - and Silverlight is showing up and marked enabled - yet none of the sites that use Silverlight are presenting the pages in Silverlight.
I've also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the add-in - no effect.

Hi NiteZephyr,
Firstly, remove all the Silverlight related.(manually delete its folder, http://blogs.msdn.com/rpomeroy/archive/2008/06/10/how-to-manually-clean-up-a-bad-silverlight-installation.aspx).
Secondly, please remove IE8 from your system. Please reference to this thread.(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700). Restart your computer.
Finally, reinstall them. Before the installation, you'd better use Windows Update to update your system first and then install IE8 and Silverlight related.
Best regards,
Jonathan

Well - that may work for NiteZephyr - however I'm experiencing this issue on Windows 7 Ultimate (RTM Version) on a brand new rebuild. So It's rather difficult to uninstall/reinstall IE8.
However - I did try uninstalling Silverlight using your link and re-installing - no luck there.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated...

I was prompted by Silverlight this morning to upgrade the plugin to the latest version of Silverlight 3.
I am running winXp, Sp2, IE6
I can not view any silverlight sites after trying to upgrade.
I can view everything using FireFox.
I uninstalled Silverlight, Silverlight Developer Tools, July 2009 SDK, reinstalled all of them and still I am prompted to install Silverlight when I use IE6 but no issues with FireFox.
Any help/clues would be appreciated!!!

Well - I found what was causing my issue.
WebShots Desktop software from American Greetings (www.webshots.com).
After working with MS for a couple of weeks I just decided to start rebuilding my system from Scratch - and I basically tested Silverlight after every program installed. After I found that Webshots was the cause - I uninstalled the program - and Silverlight started working again... :)
I did some further testing - first by reinstalling WebShots but without the IE toolbar - Still Failed.
Knowing that Webshots was the cause - I checked the Add-ins that were installed - and found that if I disabled the agcore.AGUtils add-on (which WebShots installed) - that allowed Silverlight to function :)

jleathlean - I can confirm this conflict. We're working on understanding the conflict now.

This must be the problem on my computer. I just got a brand new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. I went to watch a Netflix moving (instantly) and was prompted to install Silverlight. I tried to do so, and got the message that Silverlight is already installed. Tried a bunch of stuff that didn't work, including spending a lot of time on the phone with Netflix tech support, but they finally said I had to go through Microsoft. I do have Webshots on my computer. I am just your basic average user, and do not get into editing registries -- aargh! I will try the suggestion mentioned above -- sounds safe enough. Hope I don't mess anything up.

OK, I went and disabled the agcore.AGUtils, and Silverlight works just fine in Netflix. I assume this means I can't also use Webshots (?) Too bad, I love Webshots, and just paid for a year's worth of premium. Hopefully this conflict will be resolved soon.

I am a NetFlix subscriber and I keep getting the error "install Silverlight" but it's already installed, I uninstall my old version and install again but in about a week I get the error again. I am running XP SP3 with IE8.
BTW: I don't have WebShots installed.

Try this:
As a first aid, decide whether you can live without the add-on(s) in the black list or without Silverlight. In the near future you'll have to live without at least one of the two.
Try to find to indentify the manufacturer and the product of the add-on(s) in your black list. Try to ask the manufacturer customer support for a resolution or try to search the internet for the resolution.
Good luck,Boaz.

I have done everything above to the letter but I still keep getting prompted to install Silverlight. I even searched my entire registry and removed all references to Silverlight. One thing I noticed is that when I go to the Program Files folder, there never is a folder called Microsoft Silverlight. I've followed all instructions exactly and still can't get this to install. Is there a support number I can call? Or some other source I can go to that will get me answers?
