Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

I'm getting this error when I try to install Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008.

An Error Has Occurred:
Silverlight Tools cannot be installed because one or more of the following conditions is true:

1. Visual Studio 2008 RTM is not installed.
2. The Web Authoring feature of Visual Studio is not installed.
3. A previous version of the Silverlight Runtime is installed.
4. A previous version of the Silverlight SDK is installed.
5. The Visual Studio Update KB949325 is installed.
6. A previous version of Silverlight Tools is installed.

To continue, please install or uninstall the appropriate products and run this installer again.

I made to sure to uninstall any previous Silverlight 1.0/1.1 things through Programs and Features.  I have Visual Studio Team System 2008 RTM and Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component installed.  I don't have KB949325 installed afaik .. would this show up in Programs and Features?

I have more detailed steps as to what I've done in a post on my blog.

I've exhausted all ideas for what to do to fix this problem.  I really want to play with the labs and SDK!  Can anyone help me please?

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

Hi Matt,

I have had the same problems.  However, I overcame the problems by doing the following:

  1. Run the Silverlight Tools installer
  2. When you get the error, leave the installer window OPEN
  3. Open WIndows Explorer
  4. You will notice a directory with something that looks like a GUID.  The specific name changes each time
  5. Inside of this directory you will see the individual programs.  Install them in the following order
    1. Silverlight 2.0
    2. Silverlight 2.0 SDK
    3. Visual Studio Tools
    4. Hotfix

If this answers your question, please select "mark as answer", otherwise, please post a follow up question. Thanks!

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

Chad,

That solved my problem.

I'm not sure what you meant by Step 4 Hotfix.  I didn't see any executables in the folder with anything that looked like hotfix.  But I'm not sure that matters because I'm now showing the tools as being installed.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.  (I've marked as answer)

Damn, at first had same problem and solved it with way you described. Now, while creating new SL2 application in VS 2008 i getting this error:

Could not load type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.Silverlight.IVsSilverlightService' from assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.Application, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'.

I should say, that i haven't installed Hotfix. May be it fixes the problem with VS? Because projects created in Blend March preview works fine.

I and many in my team also encountered the error where the chained installer would not install after uninstalling the products it mentions...

Seems that problem is global... it's interesting to know: are there any persons which have no problems with installing Tools for VS and creating project there...

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

I'm running VS Web Developer 2008 Express on Vista (no SP1) and can't get the tools to install into VS. The installer is not finding Express. SL2 and the SDK went in OK after following the suggestion above. Never had the update installed to begin with.

"You must install the final release version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 before installing Silverlight Tools."

 my version is 9.0.21022.8 RTM

The tools do not work on the Express versions.  You must have Visual Studio 2008 standard or above installed: http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/

That's true for 1.1 but 2.0 is supposed to work with Express. I'm here at MIX and the site confirms this (on The Bits page for attendees).

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

I'm getting the error message "<path>\silverlight_chainer.exe is not a valid Win32 application" when I try to install "Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008". I'm running Vista Enterprise and have VS2008 Team Suite installed. I downloaded the file from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E0BAE58E-9C0B-4090-A1DB-F134D9F095FD&displaylang=en if people wonder where I got the exe :-)

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

I ended up uninstalling everything and starting with the tools install (which also installed the runtime and SDK) then installing Blend 2.5.  Everything appears to be working for me now.

 5. The Visual Studio Update KB949325 is installed.

this is hidden by default, make sure the updates checkbox is clicked to see this - had me stumped for a bit!

Yeah, there's a similar setting in Vista to display updates - "View installed updates".

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

I just spent the evening struggling with this install.  It turns out that there's an additional requirement not listed in the litany of requirements, which is pretty obvious in retrospect now that I think about it, but not so much three hours ago.  :)  You've got to make sure that you've installed the Visual Web Developer feature in Visual Studio 2008.  If you didn't select this feature at install time, you can add it later via Add/Remove Programs (on XP) or Programs and Features (on Vista).

- Uninstall SL2 Tool for Visual Studio 2008 ( I think you extracted the silverlight-chainer.exe, right?  )

- Uninstall SDK

- Install Vs 2008 hot-fix

- install SL2 Tool for VS 2008 (don't install SDK. SL2Tool already has it.)

It is working for me now.

First installed VS 2008 Professional(Trial Edition).

Installed Silverlight 2 (beta 1) and then installed Silverlight 2 (beta1) Tools. Didn't need anything else.

It is working fine now.

What do you mean?  KB 949325 is included in the chainer and is required for working with Silverlight 2.

Do you remember this popular error when we got while installing SL2 Tool for VS?

An Error Has Occurred:
Silverlight Tools cannot be installed because one or more of the following conditions is true:

1. Visual Studio 2008 RTM is not installed.
2. The Web Authoring feature of Visual Studio is not installed.
3. A previous version of the Silverlight Runtime is installed.
4. A previous version of the Silverlight SDK is installed.
5. The Visual Studio Update KB949325 is installed.
6. A previous version of Silverlight Tools is installed.

If you have  KB949325 and SL 2 (not just 1.0 or 1.1) SDK installed in your machine, you will get this error.

Re: Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

Ah yes.  This is an issue with the chainer installer (it's pretty dumb).  The problem is that it can't get over the fact that the patch may be installed already, and so it gives this message.  Ideally, this would work fine if the chainer worked the first time you ran it, since you wouldn't have the KB otherwise.  The SDK has a similar issue that we're trying to work around for Beta 2.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

Hi mattcasto,

I from VN, the first time i install VS2008 professional I'm getting same error,

<< An Error Has Occurred:
Silverlight Tools cannot be installed because one or more of the following conditions is true:

1. Visual Studio 2008 RTM is not installed.
2. The Web Authoring feature of Visual Studio is not installed.
3. A previous version of the Silverlight Runtime is installed.
4. A previous version of the Silverlight SDK is installed.
5. The Visual Studio Update KB949325 is installed.
6. A previous version of Silverlight Tools is installed. >>

I fixed this problem  and now running very good, i want to share my step by step, follow me:

Step 1: The 1st, you must install VS 2008 Standard edittion or Professional edition  (because MS Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 not support VS 2008 Expression web edition ...)

When you install VS 2008 type full verion or default , it will install The Web Authoring feature of Visual Studio, The Visual Studio Update fix hot ( not KB949325, but no problem ).

Step 2: The 2rd, you must uninstall everything relative to MS Silverlight verion 1/ 2 ... ( notes: you can access Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ Adds or remove programs  for uninstall Microsoft Silverlight ).

Step 3: The 3th, you must download software MS Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 on MS's Address:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E0BAE58E-9C0B-4090-A1DB-F134D9F095FD&displaylang=en

<<

File Name:silverlight_chainer.exe
Version:beta1
Date Published:3/5/2008
Language:English
Download Size:54.5 MB

 >>

(Notes: you just install MS Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 (silverlight_chainer.exe) because it have got ready Silverlight SDK ,

If you installed Silverlight SDK then you must uninstall it (Silverlight SDK because it is error - no support VS 2008 pro / std), after that you can continues install MS Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008.

Step 4:  MS Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 will install and automatic download update fix for The Visual Studio Update KB949325.

And complete for you !

Now, I using VS 2008 Professional on XP SP2 and Vista very cool.

Cheer.

Victoria Lee.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 Install Error

This not worked for me.

I unpack the silverlight_chainer.exe and try to install all parts.

All is ok until i try to install:

VS90-KB950630.msp

or

VS90SP1-KB950632.msp

Then this packages show an error saying  that can´t fin the program for the update. I think that there are some problems with my version of visual studio 2008 because it a Spanish profesional edition. I think that only ENU version can install silverlight 2 tools

 (Sorry for my english)

vgarcia: There are different versions of the chainer for different languages.  If you go to the download page there is a dropdown box to select the language you want.  Try the Spanish one Smile
