I have a XP Professional SP3 machine on which every available Windows Update except Silverlight 2.0 has installed flawlessly with no problem whatsoever.
As far as I can determing no earlier versions of Silverlight have ever been installed, and there is no Silverlight listing whatsoever in "Add or Remove Programs".
The computer meets all the prerequisites for Silverlight, such as processor, memory, etc.
Each time I have tried to install it (and that's been many), be it from Windows Update, from the Silverlight Website, or the "standalone" file which I downloaded to my hard drive, I always get the same error.
A dialog box pops up in the middle of my screen talking about a .NET installation situation as follows:
Microsoft .NET Framework Setup
Usage: One or more of the following options.
/? or /h this dialog
/p <Product> product that installs the .NET Framework
/q quiet setup
/uninstall. /p must be given
/l creates netfx.log in temp directory.
OK
After I click on the "OK" button the dialog box goes away and the installation terminates.
I have checked in "Add or Remove Programs" and all .NET versions and updates are already installed and when I go to the Windows Update site it does not show any remaining .NET updates or Service Packs which remain to be installed.
Why then would the simple act of trying to install Silverlight 2.0 invoke some sort of .NET installation routine when all that has already been installed?
Please advise what I need to do to finally get Silverlight to install.

did you install visual studio 2008 along with
visual studio 2008 sp1 or visual studio web developer 2008 visual studio web developer 2008 sp1???

The only things that have been installed are those which were automatically done so by Windows / Microsoft Update, which I assume would "know" what needs to be installed to make Silverlight (or whatever else) work properly.
I have not manually installed any other software, and for sure not Visual Studio (or at least not knowingly).
I read a post somewhere that said that you only needed Visual Studio if you were going to do development work, which I am not.
This is just a mainstream production computer which routine office work is done on; nothing fancy here.
Any further ideas would be appreciated though.

Here it is, as requested; please advise if you glean anything from it...
Note though, that this is what happens each time I try to install Silverlight; I am not trying to install .NET - it just somehow has some weird linkage to it, as if it "calls" .NET as part of the Silverlight installation process.

Thank you but as I mentioned in my original post, I've already tried that with the "standalone" file, which I downloaded and attempted to install early on.
It makes no difference whether I try to install it from Microsoft Update, the official Silverlight Web page or the downloaded executable, it always results in that same .NET error message (if that's what it is) mentioned above.
Can you tell anything from the log you requested me to post? That's what I get each time I try to install Silverlight.

Are you sure that no previous version of silverlight exist on your system? It looks like a previous version is not allowing you to install a new one.
When you started installing fromm the direct link did the silverlight installation dialogbox openup?

Thank you, but also as I mentioned in my original post, there is no sign of Silverlight in the "Add or Remove Programs" list in the Control Panel; if it's not there then I don't know where else to go look for it.
Also, how are you determining that a previous version of Silverlight might exist when all it (the netfx.log file) references (as far as I can tell, anyway) is some kind of .NET installation routine?
I see no mention of Silverlight in the netfx.log file.
As for installing Silverlight from the standalone downloaded executable file, the only dialog box which opens up is also the one I mentioned in my original post, and that's the one that basically duplicates the contents of the netfx.log file that I posted.

I don't mean to sound like an ungrateful sourpuss here or anything, but I finally solved my problem via my own volition and with little more than a dose of good ol' common sense and some technical research.
I'm only a simple "hardware" guy, never having had so much as a single course in Visual Basic, let alone the more high falutin' .NET and Silverlight development skills as one would expect to find here, but I'm really surprised at such a lack of helpful information by the supposed "experts" who frequent this Forum, consisting no doubt of more than a few Microsoft employees, let alone the ISVs who are on here as well.
Anyway, based on my observations that this seemed to have everything to do with .NET and little, if anything, to do with Visual Studio or whatever, I went to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and read how to completely uninstall all of the old .NET applications, hotfixes and service packs right back through 1.0.
I had to do this manually, as for some reason the Windows Installer mechanism was totally defunct and hosed-up to the max; this included using the Windows Installer Clean-up tool as well as hacking the Registry, something I was reluctant to do but at this point had no choice.
Anyway, the upshot is that after several hours worth of work uninstalling and then reinstalling all of the myriad .NET Framework programs, hotfixes and service packs right up through 3.5 SP1, I was finally able to get Silverlight 2.0 to install and run flawlessly.
It would have been nice if some of the learned individuals who haunt this Forum and whose knowledge of this stuff far exceeds mine perhaps would have suggested this, which would have saved me several days (and nights) of fruitless efforts just to get Silverlight to install and function correctly.
Since nothing in the Computer World happens in a vacuum, meaning if one guy has a certain problem then dozens, if not hundreds more have that exact same problem (with perhaps a little variation on the theme), I just hope my experience here as a total novice might prove to be of some assistance to them.
I know it's an all volunteer deal here and maybe "beggars can't be choosers", but I would hope in the future that a little more meaningful help from the experts and the pros might be more forthcoming; after all, isn't that what forums like this are for?

I can understand your frustration and ur anxiety of getting your problem solved. But I can say you werent lucky enough on a day that your forum didnt catch some experts eyes. But now tht you have resolved ur issue. you could volunteer to help on others who could have the same problem. Its not everyone can be available at the same time. Its just you should be lucky enough to get your solution resolved. I can bet you wouldnt know and surely wont be available for sure when another guy can raise the same request like urs. But we can only hope our problems gets the needed attention but cannot guarantee it and enforce its been addressed.
But I agree that you havent recieved many responses.
But dont get disheartened and it would not happen again and again do post in your further queries and I am sure you must get enough responses..
