Hello,

I am currently researching a crash when running our web application that is reported in increasing frequency by users of Internet Explorer 7. The situation is as follows:
- Our application uses frames, one of them hosting an input form that has some windowed VB6 ActiiveX controls used for specific data entry (automatic address resolution).
- Some (but far from all) IE7 users report that IE7 crashes if they open a second instance of the web application in a tab of the same IE7 window where the first instance is running
- The issue seems to be tied to specific -mostly brand new- computers. Both Windows XP and Windows Vista users report the problem

Now I got one laptop computer that has the issue on my desk for investigation. I found the following:
- IE7 still crashes if I load a very simple web page hosting a stripped-down version of the ActiveX control (containing no code and no child controls) in 2 tabs and I refresh the second tab a few times
- The crash stops happening if I change the threading model of the control from 'Apartment threaded' to 'Single threaded'. Although this makes the application much more stable (completely contrary to the recommendations of Microsoft, I may add :P), that solution is not acceptable to our customers because single threaded ActiveX controls do not receive Tab-key keyboard events and the control is to be used for keyboard data entry.

Today we found that the crash also stops happening if we disable all of the the following browser Add-ons:
AgControl Class
Windows Live Sign-in Helper
Windows Messenger

As soon as one of these add-ons is enabled again, a web page hosting apartment-threaded VB6 custom controls will crash the browser again. Now the msn messenger stuff is no problem - we can easily do without those plugins, but we would really appreciate some help in solving the issue with the Silverlight plug-in. Our development team in India just completed a web-based visual workflow designer programmed in Silverlight, so even if disabling AgControl helps our customers today, we would just have the problem back in the very near future :(

My company is Microsoft gold partner and I would be willing and able to work with someone in debugging this Silverlight/IE7 stability issue (we have all flavors of Visual Studio available if a debug environment would be needed).

My intention is to show people crashes (between software clients) are happening under different situations. The case for MLB TV is another example of crash (minor crash). Thanks for updating us about your experience and thoughts. You find there is no crash now does not guarantee there will be no crash in the coming 3 months. 3-days outage happened to Skype in August 2007 when it experienced no previous serious outage.

I'm not sure of your intentions, but it seems like you are trying to hijack this thread. If your previous post is referencing something that would be helpful to others, then don't be vague about it. Give us a link with some details of what you are talking about.

On another note, I have reinstalled silverlight and have not run into the crashing/freezing issues anymore. I didn't uninstall any of my previous apps either (i.e. google tool/sidebar, virus scanner, etc.). There must have been an update that fixed the crashing issues (for me at least).

I find Silverlight 2.0 requires long time (may be 3 to 5 minutes) to download the video, with download rate around 100 Kbps. Do you experience this? If yes, Silverlight must fix such slow download or people will drop watching video on Silverlight. This can be a possible interference or minor crash at Silverlight 2.0 download. I am using Win XP, IE7 and a broadband of 3 to 6 Mbps on a Core 2 Duo PC.

Finally after months of installing-uninstalling-reinstalling silverlight in all its forms and versions I am able to get popfly to work on my laptop. The issue seems to be resolved for now - the solution getting rid of googledesktop - complete uninstall of google did the trick.

So removal of google desktop seems to work at least in some cases.

Hi Chad,

I agree to your view that such crash can be viewed either as a problem of Silverlight or Google Desktop's (anti-virus software's). My experience and tests show that anti-virus software (& Google Desktop) can be a significant source of crash on many video and audio applications from time to time. Silverlight is just one of such video applications, which are either real-time or with a relatively small buffer during video streaming. We have to monitor & prepare to resolve such crash daily because the security settings are updated frequently (in response to new attack or new security holes found), at anti-virus software or Google Desktop etc.

Video and audio applications have active and continous flow of data into & out of the PC. This makes the security settings & anti-virus software easily scan (or block) the video & audio streams too much and create serious interference (or crash). Other applications will not experience such interference & crash so often and so easily.

p.s. We may say the security updates or the software design are not perfect and result in serious crash from time to time. This is how and why Skype (a telecom operator) was out of services for around 3 days in mid-August 2007.

Hi Vincent,

I'll take a look at the security settings within Google Desktop but in my opinion they should work together with no problem. I use my google desktop more than I visit webpages with silverlight, so for now, google wins as far as that goes. Also, why is it that another solution for people is to change their anti-virus software to another manufacturer. If their computer was working fine before installing Silverlight, then the problem seems to be Siliverlight itself.

Hi Chad Morgan,

I suspect the pop-up blocker & anti-spyware settings of Google Toolbar/Desktop can be interfering with Silverlight video (& audio) streaming. What you and your colleagues seeing can be another security crash with Silverlight, similar to anti-virus software crash.

If all bug-fixers above cannot solve the crash problem, I would suggest you uninstall Symantec (Norton) Anti-virus and re-install another anti-virus software (e.g. AVG Anti-virus free version). I just noticed this thread, and have the following problem report (I'd posted this a few months ago on other MS community sites). In my case the browser shuts down, but otherwise the computer is unaffected. The problem goes away if I uninstall Silverlight. For what its worth, here are the details.
