New silverlight tools release

An update to the silverlight tools for Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 has been submitted to the microsoft download center. It takes a bit of time for it to propogate through the download servers, it depends on the server you hit as to which version you'll get. So wait a while until you download, and it should be there. Sorry, I don't have a way of knowing when it'll finally be there. The download page is at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b52aeb39-1f10-49a6-85fc-a0a19cac99af&DisplayLang=en.

Edit: Looks like its up there for me now

To know if you have the newer version, download it to disk, then right click and open the properties dialog. In the details panel, your looking for a file version of "9.0.20706.18". The key number your looking for is the final "18", if it says "12" then you have the original release.

The changes in this release are:

  • The build task that resolves the location of the Silverlight Framework for assembly references, has been updated to lookup by control name rather than GUID. So it will work with both GUIDs used for the 1.1 alpha refresh, and will continue to work if they change the GUID again Stick out tongue
  • An updated silverlight.js for 1.1 applications.

Please uninstall the old silverlight tools release before installing this one, to ensure you have the updates. You should not need to remove/reinstall the silverlight 1.1 alpha refresh runtime if you allready have it installed.

If you have added the registry key because of the guid change, you'll probably want to remove that.

Re: New silverlight tools release

For those of you using Blend, the Blend team is working on an update as well.  Until then, you will continue to need the GUID change to get Blend to work properly with Silverlight 1.1 applications.

Dear Blend team,

I tried the GUID change (I think...adding registry key, right?) but I still get the error "the name 'Canvas' does not exist in the namespace ...". Is this a known error and does anyone know how to fix it?

Re: New silverlight tools release

The .18 is the right one, it should fix the issue.

Re: Re: New silverlight tools release

Hi,

I wish anyone can help, I had installed VS 2008 Beta 2 C#, and whenever I tried installing "VS_SilverlightTools_Alpha" it gives me the message "You must install Micrsoft Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 before installing this product".

Thanks,

Re: Re: New silverlight tools release

What version of VS you have? the Silverlight tools will not install on VS 2008 express, at least standard is required, also you have to install Visual Web Developer component of VS.
