To get WMP working again, I had to uninstall Silverlight. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) and latest updated version of WMP. WMP would not launch. I figured out that it stopped functioning properly after I had installed Silverlight on 8/19/08 via MS Update. I uninstalled the Silverlight update and WMP is working fine again. Others wondering why WMP has recently stopped working may try this. I don't find anything on this forum about why I had this problem. Are Silverlight folks aware of issues like this? No other changes to my system aside from the installation of Silverlight to account for stoppage of WMP. With Silverlight installed, when I clicked on WMP icon to launch program, brief attempt to launch, then nothing. No error message, nothing. When clicking on media ordinarily using WMP to play, same behavior--brief attempt to launch WMP pointing to media file, then nothing, no error or indication of failure other than WMP not launching. Because of this behavior I have no indication that any security programming is interfering. Anyway my WMP works again, albeit w/out Silverlight. Sometimes WMP worked (w/ Silverlight installed) with streaming media (live webcast or recorded from NPR) from the web (using fully updated IE7--Does IE7 do something different w/ WMP?), but would never launch when not pointing to a media file (clicking on WMP in programs) or when clicking on an audio/video file (with default WMP). After uninstalling Silverlight, WMP launches fine, under all circumstances. MS Update Silverlight 1.0 install published 8/18/08 (KB955305).
