It was indicated there would be a new silverlight_chainer.exe installer to play well with the release of Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (Release), which is now available for download. Any news on when the chainer installer will be available?

Should be available on the same chainer download page as before. There's a slight (and ever decreasing chance) that the some of the download servers still have the old chainer cached; they should all be completely synced within the next hour.

English and Japanese versions of Silverlight Tools for VS 2008 SP1 are available at:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120032
(as previously mentioned, there might be a slight delay as the information is propagated to all servers)
Versions in other languages will be available at the end of the week.

For those downloading the new version, the updated file is version 9.0.30729.10.
Hope that helps.

Hello,
I downloaded it today and installed it but does not work with Visual studio 2008 SP1
It seems that is still the old version 9.0.21022.122 on the server.
Any chance to have a link to the new version ?
Thanks in advance,

I've just downloaded Silverlight_Chainer.exe and installed on VS2008 SP1, all works properly.

When I want to create a new silverlight project with visual studio 2008, I have an error message:"Object reference not set to an instance of an object"
and nothing happens.
Thanks,

I just installed using the new installer but it didn't integrate with Expression Blend 2.
Does anyone know what this doesn't work?

Blend 2 doesn't support Silverlight 2. You need Blend 2.5, which is available from http://silverlight.net/getstarted/

Due to other problems I have been having, I had to uninstall Silverlight 2 and try to reinstall it and it fails stating it is looking for Build 9.0.30718.xx of Visual Studio 2008 SP1. However the build I have is 9.0.30729 of Visual Studio 2008 SP1.
Has anyone seen this problem? This beta is really starting to frustrate me.
Also, does Silverlight 2 support Silverlight 1 web applications? I would assume that it should. After I got Silverlight 2 beta installed the first time, my Silverlight 1 web page kept asking me to install the Silverlight IE plugin.

The 30729 version is correct, the error string is wrong. Are you a TAP customer who might have installed an internal RC before SP1 RTM came out?
08-14-2008 12:51 PM |
No, I am not a TAP customer. I just installed Visual Studio 2008 yesterday for the first time on my laptop along with install VS 2008 SP1.

ihayesjr, can you contact me directly (amdullar at microsoft . com) about this so we can figure out why it think you have a different version of VS than you actually do. Thanks

I'm having the same problem when trying to install the chainer on our TFS server (single server install). VS 2008 SP1 and TFS 2008 SP1 all installed fine. However, when I try to install the Silverlight chainer, I get the message below. We require the Silverlight Beta2 SDK as we use the server to make daily builds of our Silverlight projects. Any ideas? Btw, the installation using the same chainer worked fine on the developer PC's.
Build 9.0.30718.XX of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 must be installed before installation can continue. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=122094 for download information.

cjlotz, is your installation of SP1 the released version? That dialog *should* say 9.0.30729.XX is required.
How was your Visual Studio and SP1 installed? Did you download and run the installer? Or did you use the ISO?
Have you ever had any previous installations of Silverlight Tools? Can you make sure that KB955214, KB950630, and KB949325 are all removed?

The problem might be related to the fact that only the reason for VS 2008 being installed on the server is for TFS Client acces, i.e. only the VS 2008 Standard Edition Shell is installed. We don't require the Silverlight for VS 2008 Tools but only the Silverlight SDK to compile the Silverlight assemblies. We use TeamCity for our CI builds so we don't require the full VS 2008 to be installed.
This worked fine for the previous silverlight chainer installer. If the only update in the new silverlight chainer is the Silverlight tools integration for VS then I suppose we can work around the problem by still installing the previous silverlight chainer? I tried it, and it seems to work fine.
Thanks

There was a rumor that VSExpress SP1 will work with Silverlight sdk.
Just installed visual studio express sp1 but silverlight_chainer won't install.
So the question - when it will be possible to use Silverlight with VSExpress SP1 ?

The only thing outside of the SDK that you might need, is the build task DLL and targets file for Web Applications. It's in the VS patch because it ships in VS and we need it in the patch for servicing reasons (hence, not in the SDK). It's under Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\WebApplications on a 32-bit OS, or Program Files(x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v9.0\WebApplications on a 64-bit OS. You can copy these from a dev machine to your TFS build machine. If you're not using Web App projects, this shouldn't be an issue.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? I am having pretty much the same problem on our build server. VS2008SP1 installed fine: In Help -> About it shows the following: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Version 9.0.30729.1 SP Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1. But when trying to install Silverlight Tools Beta 2 Refresh I get the following error: "Build 9.0.30718.XX of Visual Studio 2008 SP1 must be installed before installation can continue." The File Version of the silverlight_chainer.exe which i have is 9.0.30729.10. This all worked fine on my dev box...

We are still investigating what's going on here. We think there might be something unusual going on with the SP1 installation, but not sure just yet. Can you tell me a little bit more about the machine you're having problems with? (OS? How did you install VS and SP1? ISO? Did you burn a disc or mount a virtual drive?)
In the meantime, one thing you can try is extracting the patch required by SP1 from the chainer by running
silverlight_chainer.exe /x
from the command line.
Then install VS90SP1-KB955214.msi

Tnx for the quick response. I tried extracting the silverlight_chainer.exe and just installing VS90SP1-KB955214.msp - received the following alert: "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch." Our build machine is a VM (Virtual PC) - WinXP Pro SP3. We did a default install from the TFS Installation media. No previous VS2008 Beta's or Service packs were applied prior to installing VS2008SP1 RTM.

So I have resolved my problem with the installer looking for a different version of Visual Studio SP1 mentioned earlier in this thread.
I had to fix it the hard way.
So what I have found was that I was still unable to uninstall any part of Visual Studio without the error "The installation source for this product is unavailable...."
So I used a program called Revo Uninstaller. It performs the same actions as the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but it also removes the directories and all registry keys.
I also found that I had to use the utility on other programs, installed by Visual Studio, like the Office Runtime and a couple of others I don't remember the name of.
So after everything was removed, I installed Visual Studio, installed Service Pack 1 which directed me to a patch on the web that removed some other part of Visual Studio before I could install the service pack.
Then I was able to install Silverlight 2 Beta without the error.
So the last problem I do have is that it has affected my Office 2007 installation. Every time I close Word or Excel I get a installer launched that fails. This is the error in the Event Viewer Log.

So I am going to try and repair MS Office 2007 to see if this resolves this problem.

A heads up on Revo Uninstaller or the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility - they are using msizap which isn't a true uninstall and can cause some issues - so make this your last resort. (see http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/04/22/msizap-is-not-uninstall.aspx for more info).

Light1,
I am not sure how much more details you would like other then my previous post. I had to basically uninstall all of Visual Studio with Revo Uninstaller and install it all over again.
08-27-2008 5:37 AM |
Thanks, but reinstalling Visual Studio isnt really an option :-/ I resorted to just installing the Silverlight SDK, and that seems to have done the trick for now.
