My question is - what if you're using TFS as the current source-control plugin?
Anyone have a proper solution for this problem?

Solved.
Follow 2nd half of the advice given on the article posted above (no need to set Source Control Plugin to None)
and it's fixed
Add WCF Service Reference "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"
