There is a lot of "buzz" around Silverlight beta2 comming from Microsoft. I read "oh's" and "ah's" on their blogs and I wonder if I am the only one having problems after installing Silverlight beta2 on my two machines. Both are unusable at the moment and I am really frustrated because of this - I cannot continue my development.
Environment (both computers) before beta2 :
1. Visual Studio 2008 Professional 2. Silverlight Tools March CTP installed
First computer :-----------------------I uninstalled : Silverlight Tools March CTP, Silverlight SDK, Silverlight. Then I tried to install Silverlight Tools for VS2008 Beta2. Got a 0x80070643 instalation error. Searched over the net and found a comment on Scott Gu's blog from a smart guy, suggesting that uninstalling ENU (KB949325) hotfix should help. Indeed it did. The installation succeeded but now, every time I open a Silverlight project (no matter which one) I get a VS crash when I close VS. Then it reopens again. I cannot continue to work on such an unstable environment. I was thinking about removing Beta2 and reinstalling March CTP but ... read below ...
Second computer :--------------------------The first steps were identical to the first computer. After installing Silverlight Tools for VS2008 Beta2, I tried to install VS2008 SP1 (beta), hoping it will help. No luck. First, another instalation error - I had to remove yet another VS2008 hotfix - ENU (KB944899). Afer this I successfully installed VS SP1, but ... trying to open any Silverlight project I get an error indicating that this project type is not supported by VS. I uninstalled VS2008 SP1 beta, but ... an error is still there. This means that deinstalation of VS2008 SP1 did not bring the computer to the state where it was before instalation. That's the reason I do not know if unistalling Silverlight Tools for VS2008 Beta2 and installing Silverlight Tools March CTP will make my first computer usable (see above).
Now I have two unusable computers ... and a feeling that Microsoft has to have serious internal problems if it cannot deliver Beta2 (goLive) better than Beta1 ... It seems you guys are "eating your own tail".

You might try taking a look at this post:
http://weblogs.asp.net/bradleyb/archive/2008/06/09/upgrading-to-silverlight-beta-2-and-visual-studio-2008-sp1-beta.aspx
It has entries covering the "VS Crash" and "the project type is not supported."
Hope this helps,Brad.

Hello, I apologize for your frustration and appreciate your feedback. I would like to work with you to get these install issues resolved. For your first computer please read over BradleyB's Blog here for details on setup:
Check out the "How to recover" section and let me know if this fixes your setup.
For the second computer, after re-installing SP1 Beta you will need to also re-install Silverlight Tools Beta 2. Can you go back and re-install SL Tools Beta 2 and let me know if this resolves your setup?

Are you serious ? Or just kidding ? This was the first thing I've tried without any success. I have (re)installed Silverlight Tools Beta 2 before and after installing VS SP1, reinstalled it after removing VS SP1 - still the same - "The project type is not supported by this installation".
I decided to remove VS2008 and install it again, because I NEED A WORKING MACHINE. After that - THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. Can you get it ? I CANNOT OPEN ANY SILVERLIGHT PROJECT even after a full remove/install cycle !.
I am very upset now and I want to say it loudly - Microsoft SUCKS.

Ok, I installed a virtual machine on VirtualPC , then installed a fresh copy of VS2008 on it, then copied a file Microsoft.VisualStudio.ServicesProxy.dll from a virtual machine to my first computer. It seems it works now ok.
For the second computer I uninstalled EVERYTHING related to VS2008. Then I installed VS2008 again, followed by Silverlight Beta2. The error still persisted. I did this TWO times without any luck. Finaly, after second uninstall/install cycle I've run devenv /resetskippkgs. Now I can continue to do my work again. Please tell me that this behavior of MS product is proper and this is "by design". B*s*t.
I've lost three days full of nervous and upset because of total lack of profesionalism from Microsoft side. Once again they think they are doing "great" things, spreading all around "we are really excited to introduce ...", but in fact they show their disability. Conclude yourself.

Hey Gotenks, I apologize for the installation problems you’ve encountered. They are definitely not proper or by design. We would very much like to understand the root problem by some of the installation problems we’re seeing. Not everyone is running into this problem.
We do know that the KB949325 installed with Silverlight Tools Beta1 has a bug in its’ installer that prevents subsequent updates like Silverlight Tools Beta 2 and even Visual Studio 2008 SP1 beta from installing correctly. To compound the problem when manually uninstalling KB949325 it may prompt for media.
What’s especially concerning is that you even followed the guidance we recommended and still ran into problems.
I’d like speak with you directly to better understand the specifics of your experience. Please feel free to email me directly at BradleyB@microsoft.com.
As soon as we know exactly what’s going on we’ll post the specifics and provide a solution. Thanks, Brad.

Tim seems to have answer to four issues found after installing Silverlight Beta 2 successfully. In my case, I noticed issue #4 where Visual Studio crashes after opening a Silverlight solution and then attempting to shutdown VS.
His blog post http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?p=665 has the details.
My indicator was the installation of the Microsoft Silverlight Tools showed 1.14MB.

I am having similar problems with SL2 SDK BETA 2
I uninstalled BETA 1 runtime and SDK, installed BETA 2 runtime and SDK and now i cant open my original BETA 1 project (understandable) but neither is there the option in VS2008 to create a new silverlight project now :-s
Ive even tryed rolling back to BETA 1 but stil i cannot open the orignal project, says it is in an unknown format :-s
Has anyone found a fix to these BETA 2 problems ?

Hi, you have installed the SL2 SDK, you have to install SL2 tools beta for VS 2008 from here to leverage it in the IDE.

I have tried installing that too but with no luck!
I had a look at the blog which BradleyB posted and one of the problems described in that matched mine spot on so i followed to steps to rectify it...
All the steps completed succesfully without error but after doing it 3 or more times the original problem had still not been fixed
In the end i reinstalled the whole OS and started from scratch, just VS 2008 and the VS2008 SL tools (no SP1 beta for VS 2008) and that worked a treat. I think it is the beta SP for VS which is causing the majority of this grief, im staying clear from it !
