I had a previous version (WPF/E Feburary 2007 CTP) which I removed and rebooted. I cannot find any other instance that could conflict. I have tried both the 1.1 alpha and 1.0 beta and they both end with the 1500 error. I'm running WinXP Pro Version 2002 SP2.
Please advise.

1500 indicates your install package was somehow corrupted. It's odd you would get this on two different installs. I suggest downloading them again. If it still fails I'd be interested to see the md5 for the files. I'd expect:
1.0 Beta: 6df80a7bcbe4a542be626336293bd5d3
1.1 Alpha: 4972d3cd0a47093f66f65c44fe65a7cb

Where is the MD5? The cabs were signed with sha1 and RSA encryption.

The MD5 hash isn't stored anywhere in the package, which was kind of the point. I am assuming your installer is somehow corrupt, and therefore just reading off the signature is probably not useful. Something that will generate a MD5 hash should be easy to find (here for example http://www.fourmilab.ch/md5/ ), but if it easier for you to generate a SHA1 or some other one then do whatever is easiest.

Here is what I got:
6DF80A7BCBE4A542BE626336293BD5D3 Silverlight.1.0beta.exe
4972D3CD0A47093F66F65C44FE65A7CB Silverlight.1.1alpha.exe
I do have "Visual Studio 2005 extensions for .NET Framework (WCF & WPF), November 2006 CTP" installed. I don't recall this being called out as a conflict, but is it?

Were you connected to the Internet while you were installing? The signature verification check can require going online.
edit: And that shouldn't be a conflict, but even if it were, it shouldn't cause this error.

Yes, I am connected to the network. I'm at a corporation, so there is a proxy for web traffic. I'm not sure about DNS. It seems to me that it doesn't resolve names outside of the perimeter. Of course, the proxy is using a different name server.
Where is the request going to? If it isn't a web request, can I pop something in my hosts file and give that a shot?

If you open Internet Explorer, are you able to access http://www.microsoft.com?
I ask specificaly about IE because the proxy settings there are used throughout the OS for HTTP communication such as checking certificate revocation lists. If you are not able to contact microsoft.com, the installer may not be able to verify the validity of the Authenticode signature.

I can 100% access http://www.microsoft.com Thats how I downloaded the installers. I go there often and to msdn. It has never been a problem in the past. It handles the genuine advantage stuff just fine.

I'm having the exact same problem.

Okay, I figured out a way around it. I used winzip to extract the content of Silverlight.1.0beta.exe, then I just ran the msi file directly. Everything seems to be working correctly, so I'm not sure what the setup program was checking.

While manually extracting the files should allow the product to install, bear in mind that this is bypassing verification that the file you downloaded was really created by Microsoft.

Is there an official solution? I am getting the file directly from Microsoft, so the work around seems pretty reasonable since it is comming from a trusted source.

Unfortunatly the file itself is designed to confirm that it was not modified between the Microsoft.com website and your computer. If the MD5 & SHA1 hashes match, it is extremely unlikely that it has been modified, but I would sill like to get to the bottom of why the Autenticode signature verification fails.
The only other thing that I can think of going wrong is perhaps your date & time are not set correctly on the machine. Could you please check this for me?
06-06-2007 11:02 AM |
The time on the computer is set by the domain controller. I checked it anyway, and it is correct. I am in the Central Time Zone (GMT -06:00). This is a desktop computer, so it never travels.
I do believe the OS was installed using an image. I'm not sure what image software they use (maybe ghost.) I'm fairly certain they have to change the machine id and name and add it to the domain after they have done this. Could this cause a problem?

I looked at another post Silverlight Failed to install (1.0b or 1.1a) I noticed there was a switch to generate a log file (/l <log file>). I ran the 1.1a with the log and here are the results. Hopefully this might give you some clues.

I want to check if Windows is able to verify the certificate. If you pass the /x flag to the installer (by running "Silverlight.1.0beta.exe /x" on the command line) it will give you the option to extract the files. In the extract files, there will be a Silverlight.msi file, if you right click on that and choose Properties, there is a Digital Signatures tab. Can you tell us what shows up in that tab (screen shot would be handy)? The expected behavior is there will be an entry with Name of signer: Microsoft Corporation.

I extracted the files and came up with the following list:
The install.exe is digitally signed and has the digital signatures tab, but the silverlight_1.msi is *not* signed and does not have this tab.

That's odd... what's the MD5 hash of silverlight_1.msi?

4A9769DA76536501D86B5DFF4228E467 silverlight_1.msi
For clarification, this is for 1.0b

Running the installer with the /x parameter and then running the msi that get extracted seems to be the easiest workaround. I haven't seen a reply in a few weeks, so I'm going to give up on trying to sort it out.
