Whenever I open a XAML file, visual studios takes forever, freezes up for a bit (with a message of initializing toolbox in the status bar) and then finally it will release and give me control back
My question is, are other people experiencing this problem? Does anyone know why? I don't understand why this is happening because there is no Tool bar like for regular C# its just xml so why is it so slow?
If anyone has a suggestion, it would be welcome because its really annoying and kills a ton of time throughout the day if you add it all up

I have run VS with Silverlight on many machines, and have not had this. Do you have any addons in Visual Studio? And I have to ask, how much memory do you have, and what percentage is VS taking of it?
Are you current on all updates/service packs? Have you considered reinstalling?

Definitly we dont face your situation. Even if it loads it doesnt for so long. Ensure you have enough RAM and configuration. And also check whether have installed toolkit and other files. I am sure this should be the case of memory which is up to you. Whats ur configuration though?

Not too bad, my machine has XP service package 3, Dual core 1.86 GHz and 3.5 GB of RAM...

I don't have any add-ons, I suppose I could reinstall if you think thats what it would take... according to task manager its using about 35,000 Kb at start, dropped down to about 10,000 when loaded fully. Then I opened my Silverlight Project and its now up to almost 300,000 Kb

I have an
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86GHz
is that not fast enough? I wonder if upgrading to Windows 7 would help? What about VS2010, I would love to give that a shot except since its still beta I may be inviting even more problems

Hi Puckoff7337,
puckoff7337: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz
It is ok. Does it seem very slowly? Do you have a complex and huge xaml file? How about a blanket xaml file? Anyway, it will cost a little time to show the controls.
Best regards,
Jonathan

Not particularly big, in fact I would go as far as to say no, not big at all...
I have been defragging my computer but it hasn't been particularly useful... is Win 7 a good way to go to improve performance in this case?

As we know, Silverlight works on client. Therefore, even if window 7 can improve the performance, there is no use to other customers. For your case, we'd better adjust your page layout. For example, we don't all the columns first. User call drag and show more records etc.

I'm sorry, I didn't understand your comment. Just to be clear, I was talking about the performance of Visual Studios 2008 while developing Silverlight, specifically when opening XAML pages.

My desktop has Windows 7 and VS 2008 installed. It seems to be much faster. However, I cannot provide you the exact figure. It is just personal feelings. Also, as you konw, many issues, such as your system configuration, softwares etc may take impact on this. My environments are 2G memory, 120G 7200RPM Hard Disk etc.
Thanks.

Thanks for the response Jonathon... sadly, my boss will not let me upgrade until Jan after our current release cycle... but I will definitely repost if there is any performance gain at that time!

Thanks. At that time, you can have a try on Visual Studio 2010 + Silverlight 4.

I know, I am such a geek for this, but I am very excited for VS2010 :-)
I didn't know they set a release date for SL4 but I am excited for that too
