Future: Silverlight2 and Windows Mobile

I was exploring the world of Windows Mobile the other day and could not help but notice how aged the UI framework was comparing to what we have on PC. I am aware that Microsoft are porting Silverlight 1.1 to the WM platform as a browser plugin, but what about Silverlight2? Will it be available as a general GUI framework for WM? Is that too much to ask?

Cheers,

Roman

Re: Future: Silverlight2 and Windows Mobile

I understand the eagerness to have Silverlight 2 on Mobile devices. It would be awesome to be able to use the powerful platform of Silverlight 2 on different mobile platforms. But it is not an easy task, So Microsoft started by porting Silverlight 1.0 to Mobile devices, hopefully it will be released soon, then Silverlight 2 should follow.

I can't find any specific dates, but hopefully it will be soon. Hopefully there will be updated tools for developing Silverlight applications for mobile devices.

I hate to disappoint you. Currently, Nokia has the plan to support Silverlight 1.0 only. Windows Mobile will likely support only 1.0 for a while too. SL 2.0 is a long way for mobiles. If they put more resources on it, SL 2.0 mobile could be ready within 9 to 12 months from now.

Too bad that Nokia has plans for SL 1.0 only. Hopefully they will change their mind in the future.

Thanks for the clarification. I attended a presentation on Silverlight2 earlier this year, where speaker touted Silverlight2 and how it is going to change everything etc. Among other things he mentioned support for S60 and Windows Mobile coming later this year, so I naturally thought he was talking about Silverlight2. Oh well, fingers crossed that Silverlight2 would make it onto the current generation of WM phones.

And another thought, seeing as MS is going to focus on user experience in WM7 (animations, eye candy, iphone-type stuff), do you think there is any chance they are going to coincide Silverlight2 on WM release with WM7, as they did with WPF and Vista?

Is there any new information regarding a release for Compact Silverlight?

Thanks in advance,
