I installed silverlight several months ago and decided to uninstall it as I was having problems with Netflix, thinking that SIlverlight needed to be reinstalled.
I did something really stupid and simply tried deleting all of the Silverlight files in Program Files. Then I downloaded Windows Install Cleanup and removed Silverlight. Or at least I think I did. It certainly doesn't work.
Now, when I try to install SIlverlight it will not work because it says "Silverlight is already installed."
I think the problem must be the driver files in the windows folder but I do not know which to remove.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit if it matters.
Any thoughts? How do I go about installing Silverlight now?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help TMH. I followed all of the instructions in the link, but I still can't get it to install. I couldn't find the requisit files in the registry and using the command prompt didn't find any files either. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem on an XP machine. I installed the SDK/Toolkit but the websites never recognized it as installed. I uninstalled the SilverLight exe (not the SDK or Toolkit) and it won't install. I get the same message as when it was installed, thinking it was already installed but not working.

For me the problem turned out to be that Silverlight managed to get disabled in IE. Go to Tools | Manage Addons and search for Silverlight. If you see it, then make sure it says enabled next to it.
Other things to consider:
1. Make sure you are running the 32-bit version of IE if you are on the 64-bit platform (default IE is 64-bit there).
2. You should make sure you are running IE without the -extoff switch which will automatically disable all addons, but the manage addons dialog will say they are enabled. I was using this for a while to diagnose a problem. You need to do a right click, properties on your IE shortcut to check for this flag.

I haven't been able to get SilverLight v.3.0.40818.0 to work.
It says it Installs, and is in the Control Panel under Add or Remove Programs.
However, the only way that I can get SilverLight to function is to:
UnCheck Internet Explorer~Tools~Internet Options~Advanced {tab}~Browsing Category~Enable third-party browser extensions*
And then it shows up under:Internet Explorer~Tools~Manage Add-ons under Toolbars and Extensions...but then I loose all my Toolbars.
Has somebody got a solution? Could the Windows Live Toolbar be blocking SilverLight as an unwanted Pop-Up.

What do you mean it's in the Control Panel?Go to this site, it will check the Silverlight availability for you:http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/get-started/install/default.aspx

I have uninstalled everything SilverLight and removed the directory on my PC and it still will not install. It continues to say that the latest version is already installed.
Any ideas?

I got it to install finally. For me it turned out that I had to remove the registry key as mentioned in the blog that tmh169 mentions above.
Thanks.
