Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

After about 50 attempts, I am throwing in the towel. This will not install for anything.

I did the recommended uninstalls of everything, deleted the temp directory the chainer creates and I am having no luck. It gets about a third of the way on the second progress bar and just hangs. I have actually let the install run in the background for several days (Just because I am very stubborn) yet it stays in the same place all the time. Here is my version info

Visual Studio:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
Version 9.0.21022.8 RTM
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 3.5

Installed Edition: Enterprise

OS:

OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Business
Version 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001

Also no log is generated so I can't see any error messages. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

Is there no log under %temp% with a name like Silverlight_Chainer_[bunch of numbers here].html?

Nope and I even tried to find it with a wildcard search just in case it tried to put it anywhere other than that directory.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

Ok I did finally find it. Oddly enough Vista was not picking it up correctly so I looked again, Seems it has been running the log files and the reason they were not showing up in my browser is because they are HUGE. Some in excess of 6gb. I see what it is doing and it is going through its own continuous loop. Here is the repeated segment

Warning 1909.Could not create Shortcut Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt.lnk. Verify that the destination folder exists and that you can access it.

It does that over and over (Infinite loop from @!#@!$$) It should have full rights to run. I have not changed anything there. Everything is also closed so it is not a locking issue as far as that is concerned.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

Going to try and find that folder.

Edit: I found the folder under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008\Visual Studio Tools

This is where it is trying to write the link. I changed the permissions to allow air, water, mud access rights.Still won't write to the folder. I checked the security event viewer and find that I don't have write permissions (Even though I am administrator on my machine and a Domain Admin on the network) Here is the end of the event entry. I chopped the beginning for security reasons.

Access Request Information:

Transaction ID: {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

Accesses: READ_CONTROL

SYNCHRONIZE

WriteData (or AddFile)

AppendData (or AddSubdirectory or CreatePipeInstance)

WriteEA

ReadAttributes

WriteAttributes

Access Mask: 0x120196

Privileges Used for Access Check: -

Restricted SID Count: 0

Does this give anyone a clue? UAC is turned off and I even tried "Run as Administrator" for good measure.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

This error message was in the Silverligth Chainer HTML log file?  That's pretty weird.  Can you try doing a repair of your VS installation and see if it doesn the same thing if it's not running the installer? (Since the KB hotfix does a repair operation, I'm wondering if this is triggering something.)

You should try to uninstall "KB949325 for Visual Studio 2008". It's a hot fix of visual studio. It worked for me

Click 'Show Update' if you don't see it.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

Yes I tried that and still no luck. I tried to do the individual update and that is the one that croaks in the chainer. I think I have an installer problem in Vista but I dont see where I can modify that without completely re-installing Vista. Right now the problem as I see it is the installer is having a problem writing shortcuts to the start menu (Access Denied). If I can figure that one out I can install.

Thanks for trying though. So far it looks like I wont be making new sites in Silverlight until I can solve the Vista problem. Have not had a problem with Vista either up until this.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

I am SO frustrated! The same thing is happening to me. It's the same thing I get trying to install the Visual Studio 2008 Web Development Hot-Fix individually (VS90-KB946581.exe).

I've tried EVERYTHING ... uninstalling Visual Studio and the Web Authoring component individually, using the Windows Install Clean utility, manually ensuring the Visual Studio keys were removed from the registry, and every related folder from Program Files and the user folder. I've tried reinstalling Visual Studio and uninstalling again -- nothing works.

The only thing I can think of that contributed to this situation is that I had originally (accidentally) installed the Visual Studio professional edition, and then installed Visual Studio Team Suite Enterprise Edition over it (without uninstalling the first). Since then I tried uninstalling Team Suite, reinstalling Professional Edition, then uninstalling Professional, and reinstalling Team Suite. I've spent two days at this and chased down every blog and every darn dead end red herring imaginable.

I've come to the conclusion that the only way to solve this is to completely reinstall Vista, which is unfrickingbelievable.

I should mention that my system is a Dell Latitude D830, 4 GB of memory, running Windows Vista Ultimate with all the latest patches. It's a new system (a little over a month) with very few programs installed on it -- all Microsoft tools and related add-ins for for Visual Studio 2008 development -- plus Microsoft Office 2007 ... so it's difficult to blame the rest of the environment. I have administrative privileges both on the laptop and on the domain it's joined to, so I'm truly at a loss ... and frustrated/miserable as hell.

Re: Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1 Installer Hangs

Well, I guess a rant now and then is good for clearing the mind. After two days of sheer frustration I had a final inspiration before throwing in the towel and reinstalling Vista (yeecch).

I don't know which of these two steps is the one that solved the problem, but hopefully this will narrow it down for anyone else who runs into it.

(1) I had a shortcut to the command prompt saved on my quick launch toolbar. The target was this:

%comspec% /k ""C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat"" x86

And it was set to start in:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\"

(2) I had also modifed ComSpec in my system environment variables (i.e., System Properties|Advanced) because I always wanted the VS tools in my path:

ComSpec = %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /k "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat" x86

Anyway, one or the other was preventing both the hot fix and the silverlight chainer from successfully installing as described in the first post here. Between deleting the shortcut from my quick launch toolbar and restoring comspec to the default (%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe), both installers succeeded and I'm back in business. Phweew!
