Greetings,
My old motherboard fried so I made a new system including new HD and fresh intall of all my programs. This included VS2008 and VS2008SP1. This system has all the Vista Ultimate upgrades. When I tried to install Silverlight Tools for VS2008, I got the above fatal error message:
Silverlight Tools for VS 2008 installation failed 0x80070643 Fatal error during installation.
I've deleted all files in my Windows/Temp folder, run CCCLeaner, and have done a complete system scan using Norton 360. I did terminate the Norton virus scan during my failed installation. After I took all of these steps, I rebooted and tried the installation again only to get the same error.
Are there other files that I have to delete? Do I have to make some registry changes? I'm really at a loss here.
Will someone please make some suggestions as to what I might need to do to make this installation work as it should? I would be very grateful for any help.
Peace,

Problem solved through the help of a Bing search. My search criteria was 'Silverlight Toolkit for VS2008 installation failure.' Of course, this was my exact problem. This led me to a post on this forum in which a person with a problem similar to mine had located this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/amyd/.
In the blog there is a chart with several error codes and their fixes suggested. For this error code and problem, the fix was to uninstall Microsoft Silverlight, install the Silverlight 2Toolkit for VS2008, and then reinstall Microsoft Silverlight. For some strange reason the install of Silverlight gets in the way of the Tools for VS2008.
My system is now up and operating as it should. I really like the Bing search tool. I've made it my portal page.

There really was no reason for you to lock a reply to your post. You may have brought up a good point for which dialog could have been helpful.
If you are seeing MS Word junk in the middle paragraph of this post, I'm sorry that it's there. I went back into the post that had the MS Word markup and edited it out - or so I thought. I have no idea as to the 'why' of it not being removed. I hate to see all of the junk myself.
