Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

Hello.

I have a Vista Business running Compaq/HP nw8440 notebook.

I installed SIlverlight 2 (the most recent version) but it does not work/display Silverlight contents in my Internet Explorer (ver 8.0.6001.18702).

However it is listed in the Internet Explorer add-ons list and it is enabled.

It also works fine in my Firefox.

It only doesn't work in my MSIE8.

I tried to deinstall, reinstall, installer clean-up, regedit clean-up etc. etc., but still with the same results :(

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance,
Andy

Silverlight 2 works fine in my MSIE8.  Perhaps there is just an issue with one site you are visiting.  The menu at the top of this web page if you right click on it do you see a context menu with an item called silverlight?

Hi.

Thanks for your reply.

No, I don't see any items called Silverlight in the context menu in the menu at the top of this page.

I tried several sites with Silverlight content, but on every page the same issue.

Hello Andy,

If I may ask, when you were performing the test as outlined at the top of the thread (http://silverlight.net/forums/t/51137.aspx), did your system give you an access denied error when running the registry test? I want to be sure I understand the condition of the issue before assisting further. If it did not give an access denied error then the results will be different then if it did give an access denied error.

You mentioned that you are running Vista Business. Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Hello.

The registry test did not give me any access denied errors.

I am running Windows Vista Business 32-bit with SP2.

andy729:

Hello.

The registry test did not give me any access denied errors.

I am running Windows Vista Business 32-bit with SP2.

Unfortunately the recommended thread will only work when the specific conditions of the test are true. In this case, they do not fit to profile of the bugfix.

Me and my friend will see if we can find other problems that may have the same symptoms. In the mean time, can you check your event logs for both application and system to see if there are any entries that are related? It would also help to use Process Monitor http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx and see if there are any access denied or other errors related to either IE8 or AgControl when accessing the silverlight sites.

In the event that process monitor does find problems can you also create the same information from Firefox for us to use as a comparison?

One more question that may be important, did it work in SP1 on the same computer? If so, was this an install of SP2 from Microsoft Update or the Stand-alone installer?

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

Hi.

I checked the system Event logs and no errors related to silverlight, like access denied or similar was detected.

I did also the Process Monitoring and saved a log from MSIE8 and FF3.5b4. Where can I send the two files (they are in the .plm format, one is 8MB and the other 3MB in size)?

As far as I can remember, the Silverlight worked fine in MSIE8 in Vista SP1. I noticed the problems quite recently - surely after installing SP2.

I installed the SP2 from Microsoft Update (not the standalone installer).

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

I just checked exchange to double-check our attachment size limits. You will need to send each file in it's own attachment since we have a 10MB limit.

Send them to phillip [AT] quilnet [DoT]   com

My friend is out of town until late tomorrow morning and he has the images we used for our original issue. I won't be able to start looking at this until he returns. I'll try to get a progress report to you by Tuesday.

I'm just now getting them in.

I do want to be sure you know that I can't garrentee that we can find a resolution. I mean, we will do our best but I don't want to give your hopes up. I would keep looking if I were you.

I already called my friend and he actually has the images with him where he is at so he's gonna go ahead and get his system prep'ed. I'll let you know what we get in a few days.

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

Huh.

The mail with first (MSIE8) .pml log file was not delivered, obviously because of the size of the attachemnt (at least the auto-reply from the server says so).

Can I send it to another email address?

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

The administrator just bumped my limit to 25MB so try again. If it continues to fail the only thing I can think would be to use skydrive (skydrive.live.com) or I have Live Messenger that can probably receive it. I don't have another email at this time. You can also use Office Workspace as well if you have that.

Can we try the SkyDrive?

Yeah thats fine. Just send permissions to the same email since thats what I have for Live ID. Not sure why it's returning. The exchange admins will look at it in the morning.

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

So, we have been working on this inbetween our normal work responsibilities. Can you provide us with the security permissions for C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0 folder and for C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0\npctrl.dll and C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0\npctrlui.dll files?

We did notice something that concerned my friend. I didn't think much of it but he wants to take a closer look. With the IE8 logs we found temporary internet files (one specific one is: "C:\Users\amatjasic\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\71EH3QA4\MsgrConfig[2].asmx"). that had a sharing violation. Because this was a temp file it didn't concern me but he says that if the sharing violations prevent IE8 from accesses temp files related to the execution of silverlight apps it may cause them to either fail or not display or even IE8 to think it's not installed.

He is going to continue running down that angle. I'm still looking for other problems but from what we can tell, Silverlight is rezzing in the process so it seems silverlight is functioning properly. We did not find anything with .xap being created by IE which did raise a flag. I'm going to check into that further and see what I get on my system.

Also, were these logs running from a standard user or admin user?

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

Hello.

Thanks for your reply. Here are the answers:

Permissions:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0 folder:
Creator Owner - Special Permissions - Allow
System - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, List folder contents, Read, Write, Special permissions - all Allow
Administrators - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, List folder contents, Read, Write - Allow
Users - Read & execute, List folder contents, Read - Allow
Trusted installer - List folder contents, Special permissions - Allow

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0\npctrl.dll:
System - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, Read, Write - Allow
Administrators - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, Read, Write - Allow
Users - Read & execute, Read - Allow

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight\2.0.40115.0\npctrlui.dll:
System - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, Read, Write - Allow
Administrators - Full Control, Modify, Read & execute, Read, Write - Allow
Users - Read & execute, Read - Allow

The logs were running by me as a user on my machine and yes, I am an administrator user (in the local admins group).

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

We have been working hard to find answers. We can't find anything to suggest a problem with SL2 loading into IE8. As far as we can tell the logs suggest the component is loading correctly. We *think* it may be a problem in IE8 which isn't a good answer but we can't find anything otherwise.

My friend wanted you to try something, since you said it was working in SP1. He wants to try uninstalling SL2. Restarting. Uninstall SP2 (back to SP1). Restart and reinstall SL2. Try running SL2 again with SP1. If it works or not make another log an send it our way. If it continues to not work Uninstall SL2 again, restart and uninstall IE8 back to IE7. Reinstall SL2 and try again. If it works or not send a log.

He is trying to see what changes when we take certain parts out of the equation. Since you said it did work in SP1 he wants to see what changed in the logs between the two.

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

andy729:

Unfortunately not.

That was what we needed to continue trouble-shooting.

From what we can tell Silverlight is being loaded into memory. We can't determine if Silverlight is ever getting init'ed by IE or if Silverlight is getting init'ed but just not executing anything. We also cannot figure out where the sharing violations are coming from. They do not show up in Firefox.

Our best recommendation would either be to use System Restore to a point it was working or try a wipe and reload the OS.

I'm sorry we can't help further. We will continue looking at what we got and if we find anything I'll let you know but at this point it's not looking good.

Re: Silverlight 2 does not work in MSIE8

Hi.

Thanks for reply. I understand this Silverlight behaviour is really weird...

I noticed one thing that seems strange to me, but maybe it doesn't need to mean anything special...:

I go to a website with Silverlight content. I open the Manage Add-ons option from the MSIE8 Tools menu.
Under the "Currently loaded add-ons" list I can see the Microsoft Silverlight (enabled) add-on (ActiveX control). listing.

However, if I go to the Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Manage Add-ons option/button (on the sam web page), the same "View and manage your Internet Explorer Add-ons" windows opens, and under the "Currently loaded add-ons section, there is no "Microsoft Silverlight" listing!

Are those two "Manage add-ons" windows different? Do they function differently? Is this a normal behaviour? Or is this difference between the first way of accessing the "Manage add-ons" window and the second way, showing something that might help understand and solve this whole issue?!

It's doesn't mean much, at least not as far as resolution. The first one is the fact that Silverlight IS loading, which me and my friend had confirmed in the logs you sent. The second view should have it here. The fact that it's not is why your having problems. IE8 hasn't registered it for some reason. Bad installation or something wrong with IE8 we think.

There is still the issue with the sharing violation my friend is still looking at, which is what we wanted the SP1 and IE7 logs for. We wanted to see if the sharing violation existed there as well because we can't explain it's existance. It occurs in the temp internet files folder which he thinks is weird.
